Mobility Scooter

Mobility Scooter

Mobility Scooters basically are electrically powered scooters which are mobility aids similar to wheelchairs but are configured like motor scooters that are designed for people having some kind of restricted mobility, majorly elderly people or someone with a disability. Mobility scooters can also be referred to as power-operated scooters or electric scooters. Though a mobility scooter eliminates some manual strength that is required for a wheelchair, the tiller steering mechanism used in mobility scooters still requires that the rider has an upright posture, shoulder and hand strength, and some upper-body mobility and strength. Electric mobility scooters are helpful for individuals who are still able to stand and walk a few steps, sit upright without torso support, and can control the steering tiller. This includes people with systemic or whole-body disabling conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), diabetes, etc

The Mobility Scooters Market is expected to grow at a steady rate of around 6-7% owing to the benefits and positive impact that it has on elderly people and people with some restricted mobility. A major reason for this growth is the fact that the prescription of mobility scooters increases with age and is most common among old age peoples because of the reasons like these devices reduces the need for supervision given by the caregiver, reduced the need for assistance with transportation, and no need to push users when going outside for a walk this helps them travel independently and participate in activities outside the home which further improve the quality of life and gives them a sense of freedom, this can also be seen in the sales data of the mobility scooters. For instance, According to the British Health Care Trade Association, UK sales value of mobility scooters and wheelchairs are approximately GBP 200 million(USD 242 million) annually and annual sales numbers of mobility scooters were at approximately 80,000 per annum and the total number of mobility scooter users at 300,000 – 350,000 per annum.
  • Based on the size, the market is segmented into small mobility scooters, mid-sized mobility scooters, and heavy-duty mobility scooters. Among these, mid-size mobility scooters hold a significant market share owing to the reasons such mid-size mobility scooters are suitable for both who spend ample amounts of time both indoors and outdoors. It is also equipped with large, wide wheels that increase traction and stability over rugged terrain. However, it also manoeuvres well to tackle sharp turns in public areas such as malls or cafes and can be disassembled into parts and transported into cars without needing the lift.
  • Based on the number of wheels, the market is bifurcated into 3-wheeler and 4-wheeler mobility scooters. Among these, the 4-wheeler mobility scooter holds a sizable market share as the mobility scooter is used by old age people or persons with some disability hence stability becomes the most important criterion and because of the large base and the extra wheels these are more stable and sturdy and also It can handle the slight bumps of an uneven surface, move over grass, and also tackle gravel without facing any issue and also 4-wheeler mobility scooters are more comfortable and provides a higher range. And this can also be seen in the new launches that the companies are doing are major 4-wheeler mobility scooters. For instance, In march 2023, Monarch Mobility showcased its Monarch Air the lightest four-wheel boot scooter in the world on Naidex 2023, according to monarch mobility, 3-wheelers might be light, but they are very unstable on corners (even at low speeds) some 3- wheelers have the motor on the front wheel also which makes them very difficult to climb on the lowest incline slope but on the other hand 4-wheels, are far more reassuring. The Monarch Air not only feels safe to operate, but it also offers the perfect driving position thanks to an adjustable tiller.
  • Based on the use case, the market is bifurcated into personal use and institutional use. Among these, the personal use segment is going to grow at above-average CAGR owing to the reasons like rising old age population all across the western countries. For instance, according to U.S. Census Bureau, in 2017 the population of 51 million people with age above 65 years can double to 95 million by the year 2060 and almost 24 million people out of those are expected to contend with mobility disabilities.
