In May 2020, the Japan Land Self-Defense Force has acquired a self-propelled long-range armored military artillery. According to sources, the Japanese government plans to spend $44 million on new howitzers. The new 155 mm/52 caliber Japan Steel Works wheeled self-propelled howitzers have automatic gun-laying and semi-automatic munition firing systems. The new artillery system features a wheeled vehicle chassis, a long-range 155 mm gun, inertial navigation, and targeting technologies. In addition, the current fleet of 155 mm FH-70 towed artillery systems will be modernized. Such increased spending on vetronics, along with acquisition of new vehicles and the integration of new technology is driving the studied market in Japan.

As part of the T-72's extensive development phases, 3,860 night-vision-based image intensification cameras and 300 Israeli TISAS were produced.
