World textile and apparel trade and production trends: South Asia, October 2024

This latest report in our flagship series contains statistical data, information and insight into the textile and apparel industries in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The report includes detailed information on textile and clothing production by country, and it highlights the fastest growing markets for textile and clothing exports from each country by product category. Also, it provides analyses of developments in the South Asia region and government measures relating to the countries featured. The report presents a wealth of information and is essential for anyone who is considering sourcing from, selling to, or investing in these countries. Textile and clothing exports from Bangladesh during July 2023-May 2024 were up compared with the corresponding period a year earlier, following increases in the country’s 2022/23 financial year (July 2022-June 2023), in 2021/22 and in 2020/21. The rise between July 2022-May 2023 and July 2023-May 2024 reflected increases in textile and clothing exports to several of the country’s major markets. By contrast, textile and clothing exports from India were down in 2023, having also declined in 2022. However, exports during January-July 2024 were up compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. The fall in 2023 reflected declines in textile and clothing exports to the country’s five largest markets. However, there was a surge in exports to China, its sixth largest market. Textile production in India during the country’s 2023/24 financial year (April 2023-March 2024) edged up compared with the previous year but clothing production fell. In Pakistan, textile and clothing exports during the country’s 2023/24 financial year (July 2023-June 2024) inched up compared with 2022/23 after falling in the previous year. Meanwhile, production of textiles in Pakistan during July 2023-May 2024 was down compared with the corresponding period a year earlier but production of clothing was up. Textile and clothing exports from Sri Lanka, meanwhile, fell in 2023 after increasing in 2022 and in 2021 but during January-August 2024 they edged up compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. The fall in 2023 reflected declines in exports to all of the country’s major markets. Reflecting these declines, textile production in Sri Lanka fell in 2023 but during January-July 2024 it was up compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. Clothing production, however, fell sharply in 2023.
