Survey of the European yarn fairs for spring/summer 2025
The European yarn fairs for the spring/summer 2025 season were well attended, and in most cases there were increases in the numbers of visitors compared with the editions for the previous season.
mportantly, several key trends in colour and design were evident at the fairs. In terms of colour, yellow was important and, in terms of design, fibres and yarns made using polyester were in abundance. However, there was a noticeable trend away from conventional varieties of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polyester fibres and yarns—particularly those made using virgin raw materials derived from petrochemicals. Instead, the varieties of polyester fibres and yarns which were most prevalent at the yarn fairs were those which offered an environmental function or boasted a sustainability credential in one form or another.
For a number of exhibitors at the fairs, stretch was a key consideration in the designs of their collections for the spring/summer 2025 season. What was most significant about these collections, however, was that many had been made using stretch fibres other than elastane (spandex). Notably, elastane faces some criticism because of the significant barrier which it poses to the effective recycling of textile waste. Also, textiles incorporating elastane have been found to contribute to microfibre pollution.
