Silicone Elastomers Market Forecasts to 2028 – Global Analysis By Product (F-LSR), (FSR)), Process (Compression Molding, Extrusion, Casting), Application (Heavy Commercial Vehicles, Light Commercial Vehicles) and By Geography
According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Silicone Elastomers Market is accounted for $6.94 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $12.45 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 8.7% during the forecast period. Silicone Elastomers is also known as vulcanized silicone-based polymers, can be found in numerous forms such as solids, open-cell foams, closed cell sponges, thermally conductive, and electrically conductive. Its superior properties of it such as extreme temperature resistance, excellent environmental resistance, and low compression set make them suitable for application in various end-use industries such as transportation, electrical and electronics, and healthcare.
Silicone is identified as a synthetic elastomer as it is a polymer which displays viscoelasticity – that is to say it shows both viscosity and elasticity. Colloquially people call these elastic characteristics rubber. China is the world’s largest silicon producer, with a production volume estimated at six million metric tons in 2021. The second largest producer of this metalloid in the world is Russia, which produced 580,000 metric tons in the same year. The total global production of silicon in 2021 was an estimated 8.5 million metric tons.
Market Dynamics:
Driver:
Mounting Construction Sector
As the construction industry is expanding the silicone elastomers are used in numerous construction applications as adhesives & sealants, potting, and encapsulating compounds as well as coatings, due to their weathering properties and ability to bond to metal. Moreover, administrations are taking initiatives to upsurge the construction of residential homes to deliver proper housing for the surging population. For instance, in Birmingham, has been announced to unlock up to 5,100 homes and to provide the infrastructure to support these new homes. Furthermore, the UK government launched a new National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF) to support the construction of new homes. Such government initiatives are set to increase the demand for adhesives and sealants in the residential construction sector, and further drive the market growth.
Restraint:
High Cost
Essentially silicone costs more due to the high energy costs associated with its manufacture (conversion of sand to high purity silica, then further refinement of silica before the chemical reactions that polymerize it), there are also several expensive components needed during the manufacture of silicone (copper metal, hydrogen fluoride). Silicone elastomers command a higher price when compared to rubber and other materials.
Opportunity:
Rising Government Expenditure in the Medical & Healthcare Sector
It is used in the medical & healthcare sector for the fabrication of medical devices and device components with relatively low viscosity. Silicone elastomers are often used in the sector for applications such as long-term implants, short-term implants, medical inserts, and non-implant. For instance, the Indian government set aside Rs 69,000 crores (US$9.8 billion) for the health sector. The Indian government wants to increase healthcare spending to 3% of GDP by 2022. (GDP). This is due to increased demand for prevention, health management, life support facilities, and developments in health services using emerging technologies such as digital health and genomic analysis. Thus, with the increasing healthcare expenditure, it is anticipated that the demand for medical devices will also see an upsurge in demand, which will create a great opportunity for the market.
Threat:
Low Tearing Strength & Chemical Compatibility
The low tearing strength of silicone rubber is one of its key drawbacks. This can be improved with the addition of other chemicals, but it lacks natural strength and abrasion resistance, thus the application's eligibility for silicone as a solution must be carefully considered. Despite their considerable adaptability, silicone elastomers perform poorly or have unfavourable reactions in some conditions and applications. For instance, it should not be immersed in alcohol or gasoline. Its curing is hampered by latex, sulfur, and some other compounds. Thus, careful consideration of the chemical environment present in the processes is required before using silicone elastomers, which is a threat for market growth.
High Temperature Vulcanized (HTV)/High Consistency Rubber (HCR) segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period
High-temperature vulcanized silicone rubbers have vast application areas due to their excellent properties such as electrical conductivity, high strength of siloxane bond radiation resistance, etc. Room temperature vulcanize (RTV) is used mostly in low-temperature applications like sealing, bonding, over-molding, lens, and performing other molds in healthcare, medical, electrical & electronics, construction industries.
The Molding segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period
Molding is a commonly used manufacturing process whereby identical parts are produced in high volumes by injection material into a closed mold. The injection molding technology allows for high-volume production in a short amount of time. Labor costs are lower than in other manufacturing processes because the process is primarily machine-oriented. Design is noted for its versatility, as multiple materials can be employed at the same time and a variety of colors can be used. Due to the flexibility of injection molding machines can produce even the smallest of parts whilst leaving as little post-production scrap possible, owing to which it is preferred over other processes to manufacture silicone elastomers.
Region with largest share:
The North America is projected to hold the highest market share, owing to growing construction, and automotive industries across the province. The superior durability strength and resistance of high-performance silicone make it ideal for manufacturing materials for construction and machinery. Rising urbanization along with escalating migration to the country has increased the need for infrastructure to facilitate their occupation. Supportive infrastructure development initiatives by the U.S. federal government include investments of USD 10 trillion for the next 10 years in upgrading roads, bridges, water systems, broadbands, and power grids, boosting the regional construction industry.
Region with highest CAGR:
Asia Pacific is projected to have the highest CAGR, as a result of the presence of a wide industrial base in developing economies such as India, China, and Thailand. APAC Market growth is heavily influenced by increasing automotive production as a result of the surging demand for automobiles coupled with the rising per capita income of consumers. Moreover, the growing economy of countries such as China, Indonesia, Taiwan, and India is attracting new foreign investments in these countries, thereby, leading to the growth of various industries in this region. However, high capital investments and the requirement of a qualified workforce for carrying out operations related to silicone elastomers are expected to restrain the growth of the market in the province.
