Controlled-Release Fertilizers - Global Market Outlook (2021 - 2028)

Controlled-Release Fertilizers - Global Market Outlook (2021 - 2028)

According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Controlled-Release Fertilizers Market is accounted for $2.40 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $4.22 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 8.4% during the forecast period. Controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs) are granular fertilizer particles that are coated with a polymer or resin that restricts the amount of moisture contact and functions to dissolve the fertilizer particles to gradually release fertilizer over time. These fertilizers have the potential to increase crop quality and yield, improve fertilizer use efficiency as well as minimize potential losses to the environment.

Market Dynamics:

Driver:

Rising need for soil fertility management

Due to the world’s growing population, the demand for food has been steadily increasing. Food technology will continue to play a major role in the future, to help production keep up with the demand for quality food. Large-scale production of safe and nutritious food is possible with research and development in food and nutrition. Specific compounds, both chemical and even biological organisms, are increasingly applied in specially designed closed industrial application systems placing them in a coated layer around the seed.

Restraint:

Lack of awareness

Even though these manures are produced using regular substance fertilizers, added substances, for example, gums and polymer coatings affect their costs. Along these lines, notwithstanding the upsides of controlled release fertilizers, the market is confronting issues, for example, expanding costs of these composts, which has discouraged numerous agriculturists to put resources into these items. Besides, the absence of mindfulness about the advantages of controlled discharge composts in the developing economies, which happen to be the huge markets too, is likewise hampering the development of this market.

Opportunity:

Increasing potential in developing regions

The increasing population in the APAC region has led to a surge in demand for food products, which is projected to increase the consumption of fertilizers. However, the major concerns in this region include the pollution and contamination of soil, as well as their harmful effects on humans and the environment. To combat these harmful effects, governments in this region are focusing on the use of fertilizers that are less harmful to the soil. The Asia Pacific region consists of developing countries, in which the average landholding of farmers is significantly low. The rise in population, the shrinking agricultural land due to industrialization and urbanization, low farm yields, environmental and soil degradation, and infrastructure inadequacy are some of the factors that are encouraging farmers to produce more in the limited land area, which is projected to increase the demand for specialty fertilizers.

Threat:

Nutrient deficiencies

When using water-soluble fertilizers, a grower can adjust the fertilizer application rate and formulation with each watering to meet the exact needs of the crop and environmental conditions. With controlled-release fertilizers (CRFs), however, once the fertilizer has been incorporated, it cannot be changed. In the early spring and late fall when temperatures are unseasonably warm or cool, the fertilizer may be released too quickly and cause root burn, or dissolve too slowly, causing nutrient deficiencies and even the greatest concern when using a growing medium with an incorporated controlled-release fertilizer (CRFs) is how long the medium has been stored before use. Since the nutrients are released based on temperature, they will start being released as soon as they are incorporated into the growing medium. Therefore, the growing medium should be used within 7-10 days after incorporation to avoid issues with high fertilizer salts.

The liquid segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period

Liquid fertilizers are an effective way of providing the essential nutrients to plants at the right time and in ideal concentration. These concentrated products are mixed with water to form a concentrated liquid fertilizer. Liquid fertilizer proves to be beneficial as it exhibits quicker and broad range of effects on crops and acts as catalyst, thereby increasing the plant nutrient intake. Liquid fertilizers help in the rapid establishment of seedlings and quick early growth. Liquid fertilizers are applied as irrigation systems and as starter fertilizers in rows to crops, which helps in efficient usage of plant nutrients, thereby minimizing environmental issues. The increase in demand for enhanced high-efficiency fertilizers, ease of use and application of liquid fertilizers, and adoption of precision farming and protected agriculture are some of the factors that are likely to drive the growth of the liquid fertilizers segment.

The foliar segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period

Foliar fertilizers provide nourishment to plants and many more benefits as it can be applied directly to the leaves of plants and crops. This method is very useful as fertilizers come in direct contact with plants, so plants absorb nutrients through their epidermis and stomata. Foliar fertilizers provide higher resistance to various hormones, pests, and insects. It helps enhance the water holding capacity of the soil and is considered as an additional supplement that boosts the crop health. Foliar fertilizers are steadily gaining ground in the agriculture industry as an effective multifaceted solution to enhance plant vitals.

Region with largest share:

North America is projected to hold the largest market share owing to the mature agricultural sector. Though high priced, the market growth is expected to be characterized by higher product efficiency. U.S. was the leading consumer market for controlled-release fertilizers in the region followed by Canada. North America has significant demand of the product as it is one of the major producers of various cash crops such as wheat, maize, etc. High product awareness and usage of improved farming methodologies in region makes it suitable for the high product demand.

Region with highest CAGR:

Asia Pacific is projected to have the highest CAGR due to the high level of technological advancements in agricultural sector mostly in emerging economies. Japanese farmers choose practices that decrease both the amount of fertilizer and their labor because of smaller farms and their involvement in other occupations, which is projected to boost controlled-release fertilizers demand in the region. Excellent results on rice crop achieved by controlled-release fertilizers are anticipated to be another factor driving the controlled-release fertilizers growth in Japan. China and India are expected to show considerable growth over the next seven years owing to increasing government support and consumer awareness regarding use of fertilizers to increase yield. The increasing growth of high-value crops and raising awareness among farmers about the environmental benefits of controlled-release fertilizers are expected to provide more scope for market expansion.

Key players in the market

Some of the key players profiled in the Controlled-Release Fertilizers Market include Yara International ASA, Eurochem Agro Gmbh, Haifa Chemicals, Koch Industries, ICL, Agrium, Scottsmiracle-Gro, Helena Chemical, Nufarm Ltd, Mosaic Company, SQM, Jcam Agri., Compo Expert, Kingenta, and Aglukon.

Key developments:

In December 2021: Yara international ASA collaborated with Sumitomo chemicals Co.Ltd. The collaboration with Sumitomo Chemicals accelerated Japan’s green energy transition and built upon the growing momentum associated with clean ammonia.

In April 2021: Nufarm Ltd collaborated with Crop Zone. This collaboration is to bring alternative weed control to major European markets. Nufarm and crop.zone combines chemical and physical processes to create a compelling and sustainable method of weed control. By pre-treating plants with an organic, regulated liquid that is conductive and then applying electrical charge, the company would be able to control weeds with a very high degree of efficiency and lower energy consumption than conventional weeding technologies.

In October 2020: ICL acquired Fertilaqua. The acquisition would expand ICL’s specialty plant nutrition product portfolio and significantly enhance its customer base in Brazil, one of the world’s fastest-growing agricultural markets.
