Construction Robots - Global Market Outlook (2021-2028)
According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Construction Robots Market is accounted for $117.69 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $395.42 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 18.9% during the forecast period. Construction robots are professional service robots currently used in the construction. Construction robots prove their worth by providing major operational cost-savings through increased uptime and decreased labour costs. It refers to construction operations that are automatically carried out by using automated construction equipment or construction robots. It is used in applications such as building and demolishing of residential, commercial, and industrial infrastructures. This robotics has reduced or completely removed human intervention from construction activities. Construction robots are used in activities such as demolition of structures as well as 3D printing of walls & structures. In addition, construction robots can be used for material handling activities such as placing bricks to build wall and transportation of building material vertically or horizontally on construction site.
Market Dynamics:
Driver:
Progression of the Construction Activities
Due to the growth of construction activities, there is demand for this market. Due to the high urban population and high development in the regions such as India, China, Japan, and other infrastructure the residential and commercial sectors are facing huge development. Many accidents have been reported in these due to the problems with the old buildings which have called for stricter regulations and codes. Many legislations have been introduced regarding the repair of old buildings and construction of new ones as well in terms of safety standards and to increase awareness among customers concerning technological and safety improvements. This creates a high opportunity for modernization processes in which the construction robots are used for various applications such as bricklaying, painting, loading, and bulldozing. According to the U.S States Census Bureau, investment was made in construction works in the U.S. These construction activities have driven the growth of the market.
Restraint:
High Cost
The requirement of financial resources to adopt new technology is a big restraining the growth of the market. Construction robots that can perform various activities through arms, industrial hardware solutions, PLCs, and other technologies need a huge amount of capital investment. The sensors and tools in the robotic system are inseparable parts and lead high cost of the new technology. Construction robots have a high initial cost as compared to wages. These factors are hindering the growth of the market.
Opportunity:
Rise in Technological Advancements
The technological advancements have led to the introduction of advanced robots that are responsible to carry huge loads and complete a sort of work in very less time. India is ranked third in the world in implementing robots in its construction processes according to the statistics prompted by the International Federation of Robotics. The application of these robotics has increased by 60% in the construction industry in the year 2020 compared to 2016. Due to technological advancement, these robots have joint torque sensors in each axis with no requirement for external sensors. Climbing robots are introduced nowadays for the construction of tall buildings. The demand for such robots has created an opportunity for the market owing to the several advantages for instance highly efficient, powerful, flexible, and versatile nature construction robots on a large scale.
Threat:
Irregular Outline of the Construction Sites
As the layouts of the construction sites vary with projects, the robotic construction process needs to be predefined to robotize the entire project. The construction companies do not have any specific plan for the implementation of autonomous or semi-autonomous construction robot solutions. As these solutions are new for many companies and require significant changes, the companies are unclear about integrating robotics in the planning and design phases. The quantitative determination of the potential of its solutions is considered to be a complex and diverse process, which further complicates the adoption of robots. The complete robotic construction solutions also require an integrated infrastructure, which works in unison, for the functioning of the entire robot by the site layout. Although many companies provide automated robotic solutions, still there is a large disparity in the required operating standards and interfaces of the construction layout. Hence, the different categories of accuracy for different layouts have to be defined exactly and considered during the development of the projects. Thus, the unpredictable layout of the construction sites poses a huge threat to the deployment of construction robots on a large scale.
Concrete Structural Erection segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period
The erection of the structure consists of the assembly of components into a frame on site. The processes involve lifting and placing components. The robots designed for the concrete structural erection construct prefabricated concrete components or units that can directly be assembled on-site to form an entire building structure. Such automated erection of a concrete structure with the help of robots has reduced the complexity of the construction operations and is attracting most construction firms to adopt robots for this function.
The Nuclear Dismantling and Demolition segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period
The high growing need for eradicating the existence of human operators in hazardous areas and protecting them from the emission in nuclear decommissioning is attributed to the high growth of the market for nuclear dismantling and demolition. Besides, the construction robots players have incorporated many features in the demolition robots, which provide easy access, promote safety, and increase efficiency in confined spaces, making them advantageous over the handheld breakers or other substitutes used for demolition purposes.
Region with highest share:
The Asia Pacific is projected to hold the highest market share, owing to the acceptance of automation in mining and construction industries in countries like Australia, China, India, Malaysia, and Vietnam. APAC has abundant natural reserves distributed among numerous countries. With rising urbanization and varied accessibility of natural resources throughout the province, the mining and construction companies have started using automated equipment, operating software, and communications system to connect and operate on-site. Furthermore, the existence of a large number of robotic manufacturing companies in China and Japan and a high growth rate of the market for 3D printers for advanced construction, are driving the growth of the market.
Region with highest CAGR:
North America is projected to have the highest CAGR, owing to the rising number of construction projects, increasing adoption of automation and robotics, and technological advancements. Though physical labor has been a vast and serious module of modern construction, technology has uninterruptedly improved since the first pulleys and power tools. Robots are the beginning to help get the work done. With low US unemployment and skilled labor shortages, automation is a key to meeting demand and continued economic growth. However, According to PIAAC data, it is calculated that 38% of jobs in the United States are at significant risk of being automated during the next decade. According to the 2020 Construction Outlook Survey by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), 81% of construction firms have trouble filling both salaried and hourly craft positions, and 72% anticipate labor shortages to be the biggest hurdle in the next year. These entire factors contribute to driving the market growth across the region.
