Advanced Metering Infrastructure Market Forecasts to 2028 – Global Analysis By Service (System, Program Management), Product Type (Communication Modules, Two-Way Smart Meters), End User (Residential, Industrial) and By Geography
According to Stratistics MRC, the Global Advanced Metering Infrastructure Market is accounted for $16.89 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach $41.74 billion by 2028 growing at a CAGR of 13.8% during the forecast period. Advanced metering infrastructure helps in two-way communications and provides system operators with an IT-enabled interface with residential and commercial consumers. Advanced metering infrastructure provides various kinds of devices and services such as smart meter, meter communication infrastructure, data management which are being used by residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
Introducing smart meters as an alternative to regular meters helps both consumers and utility companies better understand our energy consumption habits. Up to 80 percent of each meter will be manufactured in France, and smart meters will eventually be exported by EDF, the world’s largest producer of electricity. According to NB Power, more than half of Canadian households have smart meters. An article from Statistics Canada indicates there are approximately 12.4 million households in Canada – that means there are more than 6.2 million households with smart meters. Worldwide revenue from advanced metering infrastructure presented a trend of growth over the years, peaking at 16.14 billion U.S. dollars in 2020. This is an increase of more than 2.5-fold compared to the revenue of 6.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2011. Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) enables two-way communication between utilities and customer. AMI offers real time information about consumption, voltage levels, current and power factor, thus, making it very important for managing the supply and demand of electricity in smart grids.
Market Dynamics:
Driver:
Increase in penetration of Internet of Things (IoT)
The growth of the global advanced metering infrastructure market is driven by increase in penetration of Internet of Things (IoT). In addition, the demand for AMI communications networks is projected to increase considerably in the coming future, owing to rise in requirement for low-bandwidth, low-cost, and delay-insensitive metering. Both of the meter's network and communications module must be as inexpensive as feasible. Narrow-band power-line-communication (PLC) and RF-Mesh are the major communication technologies driving AMI adoption in the early days. Newer technologies such as broadband PLC and low-power wide-area networks (LPWAN) are gaining high traction in the market, as communication technology has developed.
Restraint:
The shortage of interoperability standards
Adoption of smart meter technology is being researched, and many manufacturers of smart meters have been striving to create a standardized design that would comply with government regulations worldwide, so as to maximize their revenue potential in the market. Also, inadequate financial incentives for utilities, and interoperability, and standard interface are affecting the growth of the market.
Opportunity:
Rising demand in growing economies
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transport limitations were implemented, resulting in reduced industrial production and disrupted supply chains, which affected global economic growth by a substantial proportion, severely impacting market growth. Overall, demand for consumer goods increases when the economy producing the goods is growing. An economy showing good overall growth and continuing prospects for steady growth is usually accompanied by corresponding growth in the demand for goods and services.
Threat:
High initial costs
The high cost of installation associated with these smart meters is another factor that may act as a barrier to the expansion of this market. In addition to these meters have to be maintained at regular intervals and the costs linked with the maintenance of these meters are very high which is one more element that may hinder the growth of this advanced metering infrastructure market.
The smart motors segment is expected to have the highest CAGR during the forecast period
The smart motors segment is growing at the highest CAGR in the market during the forecast period. These technologically advanced meters provide greater insight into the usage of energy. Smart meters have been used in the construction of advanced metering infrastructure programs all around the world.
The home area networks (HANS) segment is expected to be the largest during the forecast period
The home area networks (HANS) segment is expected to be the largest share in the market. A home area network (HAN) is a network inside the home used to provide monitoring and control over energy usage. It connects to the utility’s electric meter and monitors energy usage so the home owner can see what energy is being used and where. It is also used to give the utility a way to control the heating and air conditioning to save energy.
Region with highest share:
North America is projected to hold the largest share in the market due to the increasing adoption of smart grid technology. In addition to this increasing population and rising number of water & electricity applications is another factor responsible for the growth of the advanced metering infrastructure market in North American region.
Region with highest CAGR:
The Asia Pacific is projected to have the highest CAGR in the market due to the increasing demand for and implementation of strict regulations and policies for the adoption of smart meters among the end-users.
Key players in the market:
Some of the key players profiled in the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Market include Schneider Electric, Trilliant Networks, Inc., General Electric, Cisco Systems, Siemens, Honeywell, Landis+Gyr, Itron, IBM Corporation, Silver Spring Networks, TietoEVRY, Elster Group SE, Sensus, and Aclara Technologies LLC.
Key developments:
In May 2021: A partnership was formed between Honeywell and wireless carrier Verizon. The proper implementation of this project will fasten up and simplify the rollout of sensors, internet-connected hardware, and controllers on electrical grids to combine Verizon’s managed connectivity LTE with Honeywell internet of things sensor for forming a smarter energy grid system.
In March 2021: A partnership was being entered between Muller systems and the cadaver’s county water district for the placement of the advanced metering infrastructure network. This partnership will cover a massive area of 1000 square miles with 14000 AMI points. Most of the meters in this district would be replaced by this project and will also enhance the communicability potential of all the meters.
In August 2020: Schneider Electric launched a new software service solution, Cloud-Hosted Power Management. The cloud-based system enables users to manage their power and energy usage in real-time, eliminating the need for time and resource-intensive commitments.
In June 2020: Landis+Gyr and PSE&G Sign Contract for Advanced Metering Deployment to provide support technology for member engagement and grid management and update its advanced metering system. The grid stream of the Landis Company was deployed with an RF mesh network and to ensure secure communication with advanced meters, budget for approx. 35000 meters was passed.
