EV Chassis for Truck/Bodies in North America
Many existing van body manufacturers, as well as new electric van manufacturers, are entering into the electric van segment, with particular interest in the walk-in van segment.
The increasing interest in all-electric vans for final delivery applications has resulted in several new entrants in this segment, both in the OE chassis space and in the conversion space. Vans on electric chassis are expected to be an effective and cost-saving alternative to traditional vans on cutaway, chassis cab and strip chassis.
Leading van body manufacturers are following separate approaches in the development of electric vehicles. The Ford E-Transit cutaway chassis, which is likely to be a game-changer in this segment, is currently testing under a pilot program with a leading van body manufacturer.
Although currently much interest centers around van applications for electric chassis, buses and vocational trucks such as refuse trucks are other areas in which electric chassis are increasingly being implemented.
OEM chassis manufacturers are also entering into the battery manufacturing segment, either independently or through joint ventures with existing battery manufacturers.
Electric chassis shipments will continue to remain volatile over the next couple of years, with delays and changes in execution of orders as the market players continue to evolve.
