In 2011, it was reported there were 132,183 K-12 schools with more than 88,000 of them being elementary, more than 27,000 being secondary and an estimated 14,000 being a combination of the two. Of the total number of K-12 schools reported in 2011, approximately 98,817 were public schools, 33,370 were private schools and 6,187 were charter schools. Total K-12 enrollment in 2011 was more than 54.8 million in 2011. Of those enrolled, more than 38 million were in elementary schools while more than 16 million were enrolled in secondary schools. Total K-12 public school enrollment was listed at more than 49 million while private school enrollment reached more than 5 million in 2011. While enrollment remains high in public and private schools, the education sector has also seen an increase in charter school enrollment. Data shows that the number of students enrolled had grown to nearly 2.3 million in 2013, which means that one in every 20 public school students in the country attends a charter school. Online education is also becoming a popular trend in the education sector. Estimates show that more than 275,000 were enrolled in grades K-12 in the United States during the 2013-2014 school year, which represents a significant increase in online attendance compared with enrollment of just $50,000 during the 2006-2007 school year. As of 2012, 31 states had multi-district fully online schools, compared with just 18 in 2007.
