Survey of Lawyers at Major Law Firms, Use of Continuing Legal Education

This report looks at how often and which lawyers take continuing legal education courses, and how much they spend on such courses. The report gives particularly detailed data on the use of, and plans for, taking continuing legal education courses given by law schools. However, it also presents data for courses from bar associations and other professional organizations, courts and other sources.Lawyers in particular fields were much likelier than others to feel that that they would take a CLE course from a university law school. Lawyers specializing in employment compensation, antitrust and tax law, as well as health care, were in general more likely than others to feel that they would take a continuing legal education course from the law school over the next three years.

Younger lawyers were also more likely than older ones to consider taking a law school CLE course. For example, 24.56% of the lawyers under age 30 in the sample thought it was very likely or likely that they would take a law school CLE course over the next three years versus only 10% of lawyers age 40 to 49, for example.
