Also, students raised in the South of the United States use them by far the most, mean of 3.69 times while those raised in the Midwest used them the least, a mean of 1.83 times. First year students were by far the most frequent users; they used them a mean of 3.13 times while for sophomore the same statistic was 2.15 rising slightly to 2.36 for juniors and 2.55 for seniors. Students in certificate or non-degree programs used them the least, a mean of 1.85 times. Nonetheless, for all classes of student, use was relatively heavy by those that used them at all, so that the mean annual use exceed the student population by a factor of 2.5:1.This 88 page study presents data from a representative survey of 1,765 full time college students at 4year colleges in the United States about their use of personal study rooms provided by academic libraries for individual students. The report presents highly detailed data on student awareness of the availability of such rooms, their incidence and frequency of use, and their evaluation of the importance of and quality of the rooms provided.
Data is broken out by more than 20 institutional and personal variables including but not limited to: income of family of origin, race/ethnicity, religion, gender, regional origins, current employment status, sexual orientation, major field of study, age, year of school standing, type of college, size of college, tuition level of college, and many other variables.
