Survey of Academic Library Leadership, Development & Use of Chatboxes

We asked: How important is the use of chatbots or chatboxes to your library’s overall mission and strategy? We gave the following choices: not important, somewhat important, important and very important. A plurality of 25.93% chose “Somewhat important” followed by “Not important”, chosen by 18.52%. Only 14.81% chose “Very important.”

In general, larger colleges, higher tuition colleges, and community colleges were more likely than others to consider the use of chatboxes important or very important to their

mission. Nearly 64% of community college respondents thought chatboxes were important or very important to their mission, more than twice as high as any other type of college.

The study gives detailed data on use of programs used for chatboxes, such as LibAnswers and LibPress.
