Ecowas has officially recognised the military junta that took control of Niger during a coup d'état in July 2023. Brigade General Abdourahamane Tchiani heads the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) and serves as Niger's president after ousting Mohamed Bazoum. Ecowas lifted the remaining sanctions on Niger, paving the way for the normalisation of relations in the region. While the bloc believes this will expedite Niger's transition back towards democracy and civilian rule, international recognition should help the CNSP consolidate power.
