CPI inflation reached a 40-year high of 9% in April. Though this should be the peak, the descent is likely to be slow given the strength of pressures coming along the supply chain, the renewed rise in petrol prices, and the recent weakness of sterling. Regular pay growth remains well short of inflation and, along with rises in personal taxation, means a steep fall in real incomes.
