When France' first round of presidential elections takes place this Sunday, it will be a reflection of the economic consequences that the war in Ukraine has had and the reversal in the polls the conflict has caused. While President E. Macron remains the favourite, the recent surge in polls of M. Le Pen (far-right) and JL. Melenchon (far-left) is a reminder that the rise of extremism remains a very real risk in Europe. Market reaction has reflected those concerns, with the French spread widening and the stock market falling in the past days.
