The chemical industry was one the worst impacted by the energy crisis, as production is heavily reliant on oil and gas as feedstock. However, the sharp fall in energy prices, particularly gas prices, will ease pressure off chemical producers – especially those in Europe. High interest rates will continue to impact interest-sensitive subsectors. Even with interest rates likely to fall over the next few months, we expect higher interest rates from previous periods to dampen growth across 2024. Benefits from looser monetary policy are likely to materialise towards the end of 2024 and start of 2025.
