Country Economic Forecasts - Austria
The Austrian economy is suffering from the latest complete lockdown in late-November following a surge in infections and we now expect GDP to have contracted by 2.5% q/q in Q4. Restrictions were eased in December for the vaccinated, but around 25% of the eligible population are still unvaccinated and mobility remains subdued due to social distancing. The Omicron wave means that restrictions will persist and, as some parts of the work force will be under quarantine and unable to work remotely, we have cut our Q1 forecast to -0.3% q/q. But we expect a solid rebound from Q2 and now forecast 2022 GDP growth of 3.2%, with 3.3% seen in 2023.
