The global nickel-cadmium battery market is declining at a CAGR of 0.7% during the forecast period (2022-2028). Ni-Cd batteries use nickel oxide hydroxide and metallic cadmium as electrodes. They are available as a rechargeable battery and works in high-drain devices and lasts longer. The Ni-Cd battery finds a significant application in portable devices such as motorized equipment, power tools, medical instrumentation, and others. These batteries are available in various sizes from AAA through D as well as heavy-duty batteries.

Some of the factors which are generating revenue for the Ni-Cd battery industry are low cost in terms of cost per cycle, ease of availability, ultra-fast charging capabilities, and long shelf life and good load performance. A number of portable phones, camcorders, cordless power tools such as cordless drills, portable appliances, and audio equipment use Ni-Cd battery as it can ultra-fast charge in less than 15 minutes. However, cohesive government policies regarding cadmium have forced the manufacturer to use alternatives such as nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) and other batteries. It is due to the disposition challenges related to cadmium, as it is a heavy metal. For instance, eight states of the US have banned the disposal of nickel-cadmium and small sealed lead-acid batteries. Countries of the European Union have also banned the Ni-Cd batteries due to which a very high decline will be registered in the region during the forecast period. As per EU regulations, portable batteries and accumulators which contain more than 0.002% of cadmium by weight shall not be placed in the market. Moreover, a better alternative to the Ni-Cd batteries available in the market is also one of the major factors restraining the market. NiMH batteries are advanced versions of Ni-Cd batteries which are widely adopted in consumer electronics. Lithium-based batteries have been adopted for most of the heavy-duty application including automotive, power backup, consumer electronics including mobile phones and so on, which are reducing the market of Ni-Cd batteries across the globe.

The market is segmented on the basis of application and type. By application, the market is further segmented into consumer electronics, industrial, healthcare, automotive & transportation, power & utility. Some medical devices including pacemakers still use Ni-Cd batteries which are providing a positive growth rate to the market. Additionally, there are chances that the healthcare segment will be the last segment which will face prohibition on the use of Ni-Cd batteries.

By type, the market is segmented into D Battery, C Battery, A, AA & AAA Battery, 9 Volt Battery, and Heavy-Duty Battery. The heavy-duty battery segment is expected to hold the largest share during the forecast period. Power & utility, automotive & transportation, and industrial segment use heavy-duty batteries which is a major factor for the largest market share during the forecast period. A, AA & AAA battery segment is also expected to have considerable share, it is due to the significant application of these batteries in consumer electronics. D-type batteries are typically used in toys, flashlights, and musical instruments, however, adoption of its alternative such as NiMH batteries is expected to decline declined the market significantly in the forecast period.
