Clean-in-Place (CIP) Market 2022-2028

Clean-in-Place (CIP) Market 2022-2028

Clean-in-place (CIP) is a method of cleaning equipment such as pipes, process equipment, vessels, filters, and related fittings without dismantling them. The advantages of this method are that cleaning is fast, labor-intensive, and exposure to chemicals is low. CIP is a fully automated system with PLC, heat exchanger, sensors, and others. The global CIP market was valued at around $6.9 billion in 2021, which is projected to reach around $15.7 billion in 2028, growing at a CAGR of 13.3% during the forecast period.

Increasing use of CIP systems in the various end-user industry such as pharmaceutical, dairy, and food & beverage industry is accelerating the market growth. CIP equipment is designed to control the key cleaning parameters with very high accuracy. Parameters include the temperature, flow and concentration of detergent and water, combined with the time the detergent needs to be in contact with soiled equipment in order to clean it.This makes the cleaning of equipment economical in terms of time spent (thereby increasing production uptime) and minimizing the utilities consumed. It also prevents potential food safety risks.

Segmental Analysis

The global CIP market is segmented on the basis of system type, offering, and end-user. Based on system type, the market is bifurcated into single-use CIP system and reuse CIP system. Based on offering, the market is segmented into single tank CIP system, two-tank CIP system, and multi-tank CIP system. Further, based on end-user, the market is segmented into food, pharmaceutical, dairy, brewery & beverage, and others.

Among system type, reuse CIP system dominated the market with 73.3% of share and generated around $5.0 billion in 2021. This value is further projected to reach around $11.6 billion in 2028, growing at a CAGR of 13.4% during the forecast period. The reuse system recirculates cleaning detergents and water from a previous cycle to be reused in the following cycle’s pre-rinse step until the cleaning cycle is complete. Any food or beverage plant facility that uses CIP technology to clean tanks, piping or product lines without disassembly three to seven times a week implement a reuse design.

Unlike the single-pass CIP design where water and cleaning solutions cycle through only once before disposal, the reuse design recycles them for pre-rinsing or cleaning out of place (COP) during future cleaning. Although the reuse design has a larger footprint and higher initial costs, it offers various benefits in the long-run. Moreover, another reason to refer this system is attributed to the fact that the recovered water can be used in a variety of applications including pre-rinse cycle of cleaning process, post-rinse cycle, pre-rinse cycle for another product or batch, and cleaning of non-product contact surfaces.

Among offering, multi-tank CIP system dominated the market with 44.7% of share and generated around $3.1 billion in 2021. This value is further projected to reach around $7.2 billion in 2028, growing at a CAGR of 13.6% during the forecast period. Multi-tank systems are used for recovery and reuse of cleaning solutions and rinse water. Some of the benefits offered by multi-tank CIP include that they allow reuse and recover of wash solutions and minimize water and chemical use. Owing to these benefits, these systems enable cost saving and hence are preferred in various end-user industries such as pharmaceutical and food & beverage.

Among these, pharmaceutical industry dominated the market with around 35.4% of share and generated around $2.5 billion in 2021. This value is further projected to reach around $5.5 billion in 2028, growing at a CAGR of 13.1% during the forecast period. Proper hygiene must be maintained in the pharmaceutical industry in order to ensure the safety and high quality of the product. CIP systems in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry is used to clean the interior surfaces of manufacturing process pipes, vessels, tanks, bioreactors, fermenters, equipment and associated fittings, without disassembling the process.

Moreover, food industry is projected to exhibit the highest growth rate of 14.1% during the forecast period. The segment was valued at around $1.9 billion in 2021, which is projected to reach around $4.5 billion in 2028. The growing food & beverage industry owing to the increasing demand for processed food tend to drive the segmental growth of the market.

Regional Analysis

Geographically, the market is segmented into North America (US and Canada), Europe (UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and Rest of Europe), Asia-Pacific (China, Japan, India, and Rest of Asia-Pacific), and the rest of the world (RoW). Asia-Pacific held a major market share of 42.3% in the global CIP market in 2021. The market in Asia-Pacific was valued at around $2.9 billion in 2021 which is projected to reach around $6.8 billion in 2028, growing at a CAGR of 13.7% during the forecast period. China being a pharmaceutical hub contributed to the regional growth of the market. Further, the presence of other end-user industries represents high demand for CIP systems in the region and drives the segmental growth of the market.

Market Players

The report covers the analysis of various players operating in the market. Some of the key players covered in the report include Tetra Pak International, GEA Group, Alfa Laval, SPX FLOW, Krones AG, and others. The players are continuously making efforts to gain maximum share in the market. For instance, in July 2021, SPX FLOW launched a new range of mix proof hygienic valves. This next-generation D4 Series allows extensive cleaning of product contact surfaces and helps reduce operational cost by minimizing CIP losses.
