Russia 3PL Market - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)
The third-party logistics, which is highly popular in other European countries, is comparatively underdeveloped in Russia. Although the sector has many challenges such as lack of competent and powerful logistics operators to cope with the management of a large network and lack of specialized logistics providers in the market, it is expected to grow at a rate of over 9% during the forecast period 2020-2025.
For about 21% of Russian companies, transportation accounts for 21-30% of their operating costs. While the 3PL services account for more than 50% share in the markets, such as China and other Western European countries, they account for less than one-third of the share in Russia. The lack of maturity in the market opens it up for international investment and expertise, hence reflecting a very significant growth potential.
Key Market TrendsWarehousing Trends in RussiaIn order to fulfil the ever-increasing demand of storage space by the manufacturing, retail, e-commerce and logistics companies, the underdeveloped warehousing market in Russia is now, under development. Backed by government initiatives, private investments and FDI in the country, the warehousing space is expected to increase significantly during the forecast period 2020-2025.
While Russia is focusing on the development of its 3PL services and warehousing facilities by technological improvements and implementation of ways to reduce the operating cost, it is also undergoing major developments in the air cargo and marine sector facilitating better connectivity and import-export facilities.
The market is relatively fragmented with a large number of local and international players, including Eurosib, Nienshants Logistics, STS Logistics, and RZD Logistics, which is a subsidiary of the RZD state-owned railways. The foreign logistics companies are entering the Russian outsourced logistics industry and some key players include DHL, Kuehne + Nagel, UPS, DP World and DB Schenker.
The warehousing service as compared to the transport service is relatively underdeveloped and is currently under development. Simple logistic operations like transportation and freight forwarding by all modes of transport are developing dynamically in Russia as compared to the complex logistics services like end-to-end integration and supply chain management. But the tendency to increase to provide more complex services is still observed. The inefficiency of transport and logistics systems and lack of effective functioning of the existing inter-regional logistics system and competent large players to manage the operations are some of the factors obstructing the growth of logistics market in Russia.
The Russian government is actively investing in the infrastructure development of the country by establishing better road, rail and waterways, within the country and with other countries.
Russia, in 2019 signed a bilateral agreement with India to work towards the creation of an organized arrangement for reciprocal logistics support for their armed forces as part of upgradation of the bilateral defence cooperation.
In January 2020, the Indian Air Force was preparing to transport its Mi-26 heavy-lift helicopters to Russia for a major overhaul and life extension, following which Russia’s vertical heavy-lift capability will get a substantial boost. Additionally India, being one of the largest consumers and Russia, one of the largest producers of metallurgical or coking coal; is planning to import coking coal, given the ease of availability and connectivity to the ports and sea transport in order to reduce its dependence on countries like US and Canada.
