Poland Renewable Energy Market - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

Poland's renewable energy market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 8% during the forecasting period. Poland’s renewable market includes wind, hydropower, bioenergy, and solar as the major sources of renewable power generation in the country. The primary driver of the market includes government policies that are emphasizing on switching its electricity generation from coal to renewable fuels. Uses of renewable energy ensure energy diversification, and it helps to meet its increasing energy demand from cleaner sources. However, difficulties and additional costs in obtaining the technical conditions (approvals from the administration, which require an additional cost and long approval period) for grid connection is expected to hinder the market for growth during the forecasting period.

Key Highlights
  • Increasing solar photovoltaic (PV) deployment is likely to drive the Poland renewable energy market in the forecast period. The country is planning to increase its solar PV share, to meet its target of 15% renewable energy in its energy mix by 2020.
  • With the intention of increasing its renewable energy share in the energy mix, Poland has extended plans up to 2030. Moreover, Poland possesses the significant industrial potential to develop the offshore wind energy sector. Thus, development in the offshore wind sector and continuous effort to meet its target by 2030, is expected to create an opportunity for the market in the near future.
  • Wind Energy held a significant market share in 2018, and it is likely to dominate the market with upcoming wind energy projects during the forecast period.
Key Market TrendsSolar Energy to Drive the Market
  • Poland, Europe’s largest exporter and second-biggest consumer of coal, is slowly but steadily adopting renewables, in order to improve the security of its energy supply and meet the target of the European Union, of 15% renewable energy by 2020. Solar energy has been witnessing a constant growth in Poland in recent years, owing to favorable government policies and increased investments.
  • The Polish government is currently supporting solar, through net metering (up to 40kW) and an auction mechanism for large-scale projects over 40 kW. The two schemes, which replaced the green certificate mechanism, were introduced with new renewable energy law, in July 2016.
  • Under the net metering scheme, operators of PV systems of up to 10 kilowatts (kW) are refunded 80% for each kilowatt they inject into the electricity system, while owners of PV installations ranging in size between 10-40 kW are refunded 70%.
  • As for the auction mechanism, the government undertook three auctions till 2018. Approximately 554 solar projects were selected, securing nearly 8000 terrawatt hour (TWh) of power to be sold for USD 579 million. The solar project allocated under the auction is expected to grow the solar PV market in the future.
Wind Energy to Dominate the Market
  • Wind Energy is expected to dominate the market, owing to a number of upcoming projects. During 2018, Poland wind energy has an installed capacity of around 5.9 gigawatts, which is expected to get increased during the upcoming years.
  • As of 2018, there was a significant presence of onshore wind energy projects, with activities no offshore wind installations. With its “Distance Act”, it is expected that Poland's government is initiating a process to shift its wind energy sector towards offshore. The country is estimated to close permits for onshore wind installation after 2020.
  • During 2018, Poland has three under construction wind parks, that are estimated to have a cumulative capacity of around 97.2 MW. The projects are estimated to get commissioned by the middle of 2020. Furthermore, Poland has another three under-construction wind farm projects, with an estimated capacity of around 132 MW. The addition of the projects is estimated to expand Poland onshore wind energy market during the forecasting period.
