  • Narrowbody is the Fastest-growing Aircraft Type : The convenience of air travel and its low cost due to increased competition among domestic airlines may boost the demand for narrowbody aircraft. The increasing domestic air passenger traffic globally is also leading to the dominant share of narrowbody aircraft in the market.
  • Business and First Class is the Largest Cabin Class : The increasing number of business-class seats has aided the growth of the business and first-class category in the region.
  • United States is the Largest Country : The growth of the passenger aviation sector and the US-based airlines' fleet expansion plans boosted the growth of the US aircraft cabin seating market.

North America Commercial Aircraft Cabin Seating Market Trends

Narrowbody is the largest Aircraft Type

  • The latest generation of aircraft seats is made from lightweight, non-metallic materials and designs to reduce fuel expenses and increase the aircraft's sustainability. The demand for seats with enhanced technological features and convenience is increasing, thereby accelerating market growth. Airline operators and OEMs worldwide are increasing their efforts to reduce aircraft weight and develop a sustainable way to manage the airline industry in consideration of the zero-emission 2050 goal.
  • An enhanced seating structure with more space than economy-class seats is becoming highly essential due to the rising preferences of business-class travelers.
  • As domestic aviation demand has increased, the market for narrowbody aircraft is anticipated to rebound faster than that of widebody aircraft. The 737 MAX's return to service in late 2020 supported the expansion of the narrowbody market.
  • In terms of deliveries, North America’s commercial aircraft market accounted for almost 30% of the global commercial aircraft market during 2017-2022. Of these commercial aircraft deliveries, narrowbody and widebody aircraft accounted for 91% and 9%, respectively. Compared to 2017-2022, commercial aircraft deliveries are expected to rise by 80% during the forecast period.
  • The rise in aircraft deliveries of new commercial passenger aircraft has positively driven the growth of the cabin seating market. For instance, in July 2021, United Airlines announced that it placed a 270-plane order for Boeing 737 Max and Airbus A320s. Such orders are expected to generate demand for the aircraft cabin seating market in North America during the forecast period.

United States is the largest Country

  • As the domestic air passenger traffic in the United States is robustly recovering compared to the international passenger traffic, airlines in the region are investing more in narrow-body aircraft. For instance, the number of aircraft delivered in 2021 witnessed a 52% rise from the number registered in 2020.
  • Similarly, the commercial aviation sector in Canada is recovering at a healthier rate. After the pandemic, air passenger traffic in the country surged by around 270% in 2021. Air travel customers in the Rest of North America increased by 24.74 million in 2021, compared to an increase of 7.79 million in 2020. Airlines are installing herringbone seats in a 1-1 configuration. A herringbone seat is a compact business-class seat with a supporting platform against the cabin wall, angled toward the aisle.
  • As of May 2022, Boeing had a backlog of 1,296 aircraft, and Airbus had a backlog of 1,561 commercial aircraft. Around 170 aircraft are expected to be delivered in Canada during 2023-2029.
  • Alaska Airlines (Alaska) has given Recaro Aircraft Seating orders to equip its new Boeing 737MAX aircraft with the CL4710 and BL3530 seats. Canada’s Nolinor Aviation is equipping its Boeing 737-400 fleet with the TiSeat E2 from Expliseat.
  • American Airlines is planning to introduce new long-haul seats in 2023, as the airline is expected to start accepting deliveries of its next batch of 25 V787-9s and 50 A321XLRs. The new aircraft is expected to feature fully flat business-class seats with direct aisle access, along with proper premium economy seats. In June 2021, American Airlines finished the “Project Oasis” retrofit of its B737-800 fleet. It also completed a similar retrofit of its A321 fleet by the end of 2021.
