Japan Mammography Market - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

Japan's Mammography Market was valued at USD 106.58 million in 2021 and is projected to register a CAGR of 8.8% during the forecast period (2022-2027).

COVID-19 had a significant impact on the market studied in Japan as all the non-emergency hospital visits were stopped. According to the comprehensive survey of living conditions (a population-based nationwide cross-sectional survey), in 2019, the breast cancer screening rate, among both opportunistic and population-based screening, in women aged between 40 to 69 years was around 48.9%. The same survey which was carried out in the year 2020 stated that these levels declined drastically in the year 2020 on an account of the pandemic. The survey analyzed the relationship between cancellation or postponement of scheduled breast cancer screening, health-related factors, and social-economic conditions. The conclusion stated that among 1,874 women having an appointment for breast screening, around 26.3% i.e., 493 women canceled their screening in April and May 2020. Furthermore, two main factors were considered to be the major reason for cancellations. Firstly, the behavior of the patient in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and secondly, the decision of the screening facilities to continue their treatment amid the crisis. Some of the patients spontaneously postponed their appointment due to the fear of infection at the healthcare facility since the healthcare professional performing the mammogram procedure is in close contact with the patient. Therefore, the data suggest that COVID-19 reduced the number of women visiting hospitals for breast cancer screening which negatively affected the market studied in Japan.

The major factors fueling the growth of the market are the technological advancements in breast imaging and investments from various organizations in breast cancer screening campaigns. Additionally, the increasing burden of breast cancer in the country is acting as a leading factor in the growth of the market studied. For instance, according to the statistics provided by GLOBOCAN, in Japan, there were around 92,024 new cases were reported of breast cancer in the year 2020. The rising cases of breast cancer may create a huge demand for a safe and accurate diagnosis of the disease in near future. In Japan, there is a need to develop advanced screening techniques or improve the imaging capacities of mammography systems to screen women aged between 40-49 years on an account of higher breast density. This leads to the surge in the adoption of newer digital mammography systems possessing greater resolution and imaging capabilities. Therefore, the market studied is expected to witness strong growth in Japan.

Key Market TrendsBreast Tomosynthesis is Expected to Witness Healthy Growth Over the Forecast Period

Breast tomosynthesis also known as Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT)/3D mammography is a new technology that helps in improving the radiologist's ability to diagnose breast cancer. These types of mammography use a series of two-dimensional images to build a three-dimensional image of the breast.

Kanako Ban in the article ‘Breast cancer screening using digital breast tomosynthesis compared to digital mammography alone for Japanese women’, published in 2021, stated that the recall rate was improved by using digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for breast cancer screening in Japanese women. Cancer detection rates were the same in DBT and digital mammography alone groups. The study concluded that that breast cancer screening combined with DBT is useful for Japanese women to reduce unnecessary further examination.

In Japan, there is an urgent need to develop alternate screening methods or to enhance the imaging capabilities of mammography systems to screen women in ages 40-49. This leads to the huge adoption of new digital mammography systems having high resolution and imaging capabilities and thus such research studies improve the awareness and growth of the segment.

Ryusuke Murakami in the article’ Comparative analysis between synthetic mammography reconstructed from digital breast tomosynthesis and full-field digital mammography for breast cancer detection and visibility’ published in 2020 stated that diagnostic performances of synthetic mammography and full-field digital mammography (FFDM) images were comparable for detecting breast cancers, and synthetic mammography may eliminate the need for additional FFDM during digital breast tomosynthesis -based imaging due to advances in image reconstruction methods. Hence all the above-mentioned factors boost the segment growth in the country.

Competitive Landscape

Japan's mammography market is moderately consolidated, owing to the presence of a few major players in the market. The major market players are focusing on technological advancements and reducing the side effects of the procedures. Some of the major players in the market are Analogic Corporation, Canon Medical Systems Corporation, Fujifilm Corporation, GE Healthcare, Hologic Inc., Koninklijke Philips NV, and Siemens Healthineers.
