Hospitality Industry in Egypt - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)
With the diversification of new types of tourism like health and wellness tourism, medical along with cultural and recreational tourism, the tourism sector in Egypt is growing and is driving the growth of the hospitality industry in the country. The revenue per average room in Egypt was grown by about 12.9% in 2019 compared to the previous year, while the overall occupancy increased by 6.5% and the average daily revenue saw a growth of 6.2% for the same period. Cairo, Alexandria, Hurghada, and Sharm El Shiekh which are the four key cities in Egypt, recorded 69% overall occupancy in 2019 which was a 2% year on year growth rate. The average daily revenue was also increased and recorded at EGP 1,290 for the year 2019.
Strong Tourism Sector Performance in Egypt is Forecasted Boost the Hospitality IndustryThe statistics of World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) revealed that travel and tourism grew by 16.5% in Egypt in 2018 which is way ahead of the global average of 3.9% significantly. This performance was a result of continuous efforts being made to improve tourist safety and security along with their overall experience in the country by the ministry of tourism’s initiatives to excel in setting up new tourism regulations across the country and improved global marketing campaigns. This trend is forecasted to continue in the future as in October 2019, the United Kingdom after a nearly four-year suspension of flights to Sharm El-Sheikh a key in Egypt, lifted its ban.
Competitive LandscapeThe international hotel brands have a strong presence in Egypt and are expanding their footprint furthermore in the region. There are more than 100 hotel properties that belong to hospitality giants like Marriott, Accor, Hilton, and are offering around 35,500 rooms/keys. Another 50 hotels are in the construction pipeline for this region upon completion which is going to add more than 15,000 rooms/keys to the supply. 45% of these are already under-construction whereas 55% are at various stages of construction (from planning to pre-construction phases).
