Germany Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Market - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

The Germany Third-Party Logistics (3PL) market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 4.5% during the forecast period of 2020 - 2025.

As Germany is a regional hub, it is a preferred location for manufacturers who can have support from the ecosystem of leading shippers and third-party logistics providers (3PLs) in the country. The demand for warehousing space has expanded in the past decade and over the forecast period, it is expected to be boosted by growth in regional trade and e-commerce.

E-commerce is one of the major factors driving the market growth. The country has been among the top 5 revenue generating through e-commerce. The emergence of e-commerce in recent years has boosted the growth of the 3PL market. Given the increasing domestic market, and the projected greater efficiencies in inventory forecasting and stock management, the need for warehouse supply is expected to moderate in the future.

Not only is Germany’s logistics infrastructure world-class, but its companies are also global logistics leaders. In fact, the world’s largest logistics service provider is a German company – Deutsche Post (DHL). Deutsche Bahn operates Europe's largest rail network and Lufthansa Cargo is one of the world's leading global air freight companies.

Key Market TrendsGrowth in Automotive Sector to drive the German 3PL Market

The automotive sector is the backbone industry in Germany and the German automotive sector is a global leader.

The automobile industry in Germany generated roughly EUR 426 billion in total sales in 2018, compared to EUR 423 billion in 2017. The 2019 value for gross production value in German car manufacturing was around EUR 498 billion.

German vehicles were mainly exported to European countries. Other leading regions for vehicle export included North and South America, as well as Asia. The list of leading import countries for German motor vehicles included the US, the UK, and China among the top three. The country exports EUR 20 to 25 billion worth of cars to US.

German automobile companies are some of the most successful in the industry on an international scale. The Volkswagen Group topped a ranking of leading motor manufacturers based on global sales, with almost 11 million units sold worldwide in 2019. The Volkswagen Group was also the leading car manufacturer by production volume in Germany. The Daimler AG was further behind with 3.36 million vehicles on the market, and the BMW Group brought up the top three with 2.54 million cars.

Increasing demand for E-Commerce fulfillment services

The 3PL logistics sector is restless, seeing the growing demand for logistics services generated by the boom and evolution of e-commerce. The e-commerce sector in Germany closed 2019 with gross sales of EUR 72.6 billion. This corresponds to an increase of 11.6% compared to the previous year.

The e-commerce sector witnessed tremendous growth for the year 2019. The e-commerce sector in Germany was valued at USD 67.5 million in the year 2018, with electronics and media occupying the major share.

Germany has one of the largest e-commerce markets in Europe. The number of e-commerce consumers, internet penetration, and the average spent per year is above the European average. In 2019, Germany had around 33% of the users under 34 years of age. The higher number of orders in the German market is due to the improving reputation of Germany online retailers, dealers, and the deliveries.

The proliferation of e-commerce is changing shippers’ demands, particularly the need to be able to support omni-channel approaches to retail and a larger focus on agility and speed in a complex supply chain with less time for consolidations and optimization of delivery. This, in turn, drives land transport companies to redesign parts of their supply chain networks to accommodate customer demands.

Competitive Landscape

The market is relatively fragmented with the presence of a large number of local and international players, including Dachser, DB Schenker, DHL Supply Chain, Fiege Logistics, and Havi. While the country is undergoing regulatory changes, the 3PL market is experiencing expansions, mergers, and acquisitions, increasing its grasp over the national and international markets. In June 2019, Rhenus Logistics opened a new operations facility for its Air and Ocean division at Leipzig airport in Saxony, allowing it to handle international air transport shipments, as well as all the import and export customs formalities.
