FRANCE ROAD FREIGHT TRANSPORT Market - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

The France road freight transport market is expected to witness a CAGR of less than 2% during the forecasted period of 2020-2025. It is estimated that the French economy shrank at a record pace in the first quarter of 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic hammered activity. Demand fell across industries, with private consumption and fixed investment also recording the sharp contractions ever amidst rising unemployment in March 2020 and muted business revenue, as lockdown measures and uncertainties over the length of the crisis curtailed spending.

Key Highlights
  • The performance of the French road transport industry is not too different from other major countries such as Italy and Germany, in terms of market growth. In what has become a trend across countries in the EU, the freight transport by road industry is only expected to grow at a modest pace.
  • Reasons for slow growth is the shortage of truck drivers in the EU and in France. There is currently a shortage of 20,000 truckers, despite there being many open job offers.
Key Market TrendsEcommerce in France

E-commerce continues to enjoy great popularity and the internet has become an increasingly established part of French shopping habits. France’s ecommerce market is typical of Europe. Over the last several years, it has shown modest growth, a declining rate of growth, and rising mobile commerce sales. Amazon dominates as the leading retailer, with few signs of usurpation any time soon.

France ranks reasonably well on most business indexes like the “Logistics Performance” and “E-Government Development” indexes and has a high rate of internet penetration. France has the world’s seventh-largest ecommerce market. The French ecommerce market is the third-largest in Europe. France’s e-commerce market will continue to grow at a rate similar as 2019 in 2020. The e-commerce contribution to France’s GDP will also rise close to 5% in 2020 meaning that it plays a major role in the contribution to the economy. As for the raw numbers, it is expected that France e-commerce will have a turnover of 115.2 billion euros by the end of this year which was 103.4 billion euros last year.

This means that France will see a rise of 11.4% in its e-commerce turnover as compared to the year 2019, which could be even more if the lockdown situation gets extended since people will then have to buy most of the things online. This increase in online buying has led to an increase in last-mile logistics growth significantly in the country.

Domestic transportation in France Slowing

Since the start of relaxation of confinement in France in May 2020, almost 60% of companies are still partially or even completely stopped and 21% of trucks are still stopped completely.

A drop in turnover respectively to -48% in March 2020 and to -44% in April 2020 is observed in the road transportation within the country.

There is a 21% increase in empty kilometers compared to the usual average generating an additional cost of 15.3% on each kilometer achieved compared to the situation before the health crisis.

The domestic road freight transportation market faces lack of skilled labor and it is expected to dampen the growth of the market. The three sectors most impacted are transport linked to the automobile sector (92% companies that have stopped completely), moving (75%) and the delivery of furniture and joinery (75%).
