EUROPE ROAD FREIGHT TRANSPORT MARKET - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

The Europe road freight transport market is expected to witness a CAGR of less than 3% during the forecasted period of 2020-2025. The market in the road transport sector, for international (intra-EU) freight services has been entirely opened to competition, but domestic transport remains largely protected. On the freight side, cabotage, domestic transport performed by foreign haulers, is subject to restrictions. As a consequence, operators face difficulties in optimizing their operations and one in two vehicles operating domestic transport outside of its country of registration runs empty. Haulers from some of the new EU countries, e.g. Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania are largely dominating the transport operations in the external trade of their respective countries.

Key Highlights
  • The EU has been suffering from low levels of investment in transport infrastructure. This has held back modernization of the EU's transport system. This poses as one of the major factors restraining the growth of the road freight market in the region.
  • China to Europe road freight transport capacity is increasing with China’s Belt and Road project implementation. Major international players like CEVA, DHL and DSV are observing increasing interest and demand for China to Europe road freight.

Dominance of Roads in Combined Transportation in Europe

Road transport continues to have the largest share of EU freight transport performance among the three inland transport modes. Combined transport also called as intermodal transportation is on a growth in Europe and this has led to the increasing importance of road freight in conjunction with other transportation like ocean and rail transport. The increasing intra-EU trade along with the growth in the international trade has resulted in increasing dependency on intermodal road freight transportation in the region.
