Canada Mammography Market - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

The Canada mammography market was valued at USD 76.33 million in 2021 and is projected to register a CAGR of 8.06% during the forecast period (2022-2027).

COVID-19 has had a major impact on breast care practices. As per the data published by the National Institute of Health, initially, in March 2020, non-urgent imaging studies, with screening mammography, were restricted and even momentarily stopped after lockdowns were introduced in some provinces of Canada. As a result, screening volumes plummeted. However, healthcare establishments continued to guarantee that safety measures were in place to protect patients and healthcare personnel. Mammograms, imaging-guided interventional procedures, and breast ultrasounds necessitate close and repetitively prolonged contact between the patient and medical professional. This physical proximity renders infection control preventive measures especially critical. Owing to such conditions, the mammography market across Canada faced a setback in the initial phase of the pandemic, owing to lockdowns and social distancing measures.

Additionally, a study published in June 2021 titled “COVIDSurg Collaborative” estimated that nearly 400,000 elective surgeries and procedures across Canada were delayed or canceled throughout the country by mid-June, due to the pandemic. This created a backlog that might take more than a year to clear. When elective activities resumed, the government planned to prioritize patients based on clinical urgency, which further delayed the screening procedures. For instance, 7,987 oncology surgeries were performed in the same period in 2019, in comparison with 5,317 in 2020, representing a decrease of 33%, on an account of COVID-19 and lesser screening tests.

The growth is also fueled by the launch and growing adoption of advanced mammography devices with innovative technologies. For instance, in October 2021, FUJIFILM Canada Inc. announced that it received a Health Canada medical device license for its ASPIRE Cristalle digital mammography solution. It announced an expansion of its partnership with Christie Innomed to offer the product across every province in Canada.

Hence, owing to the above-mentioned factors, the market studied is expected to witness strong growth over the forecast period.

Key Market TrendsDigital System are Expected to Witness Significant Growth Over the Forecast Period

In digital mammography, the X-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors which convert X-rays into electrical signals, and these electrical signals are used to produce images of breasts. Digital mammogram images are stored on a computer and can be easily shared electronically, allowing multiple providers to share necessary data in order to improve care.

Digital mammography uses less radiation. Digital mammograms also have better picture clarity and the ability to alter the photos afterward. This can make detecting abnormal changes much more accurate, due to the detail provided. The growing initiatives by the governments for screening breast cancer and adopting digital systems for screening are improving the segment growth in the country. The Ontario Breast Screening Program is focused on providing mammography tests every two years. Women between the ages of 50 and 74 are eligible for the Ontario Breast Screening Program, though they have no new symptoms of breast cancer or do not have a personal history of breast cancer. Merivale Medical Imaging provides digital mammography technology, and it is affiliated with the Ontario Breast Screening Program.

The growing breast cancer incidences and the growing screening programs are increasing the digital systems as they are more prominent, since past few years, owing to the advantages, boosting the segment’s growth in the country.
