Agriculture in Bahrain - Growth, Trends, COVID-19 Impact, and Forecasts (2022 - 2027)

Agriculture in Bahrain is projected to register a CAGR of 1.8% during the forecast period (2021-2026).

Due to Covid-19, there has been a labor shortage in the agriculture industry due to movement restrictions and difficulties in importing and exporting agriculture products as the whole supply chain is affected, including producers, broker, and transport companies.

Bahrain is characterized by high temperatures, limited arable land, water scarcity, and increasing groundwater salinity resulting in limited crops to be grown in the country. The national government is focusing to intensify the finance for agriculture and livestock to attract foreign investments for agriculture projects in order to keep up with local demand.

The rise in consumption, advanced technologies, and low water requirements for horticulture are the major drivers behind the growth of the market studied. Bahrain has a negligible production of cereals and other agriculture products contributing to high food imports to meet the local demand. Water constraints and unavailability of agriculture land are the major constraints in crop production in Bahrain.

Key Market TrendsLow Water Requirements for Horticulture is Driving the Market

Bahrain is using desalination for potable drinking water, which helped the country to increase agriculture production. Desalination is a process that leads to the removal of mineral components from saline water. Horticulture is the new trend in agriculture production which has given a boost to production and has improved the condition of agriculture than it was in the past few years. With increasing greenhouse in the region, horticulture produce is booming even as the day temperatures are reaching over 50 degrees Celsius in the harsh summer months. Bahrain has got lots of potential to expand greenhouse horticulture, where water is used very efficiently, and this is likely to show a positive trend in the growth of the agricultural industry of the region in the coming years.

Rise of Agricultural Hydroponic

Harsh Climate and lack of water resources is the main reason for the region's low agricultural output. However, hydroponic systems, a method of growing plants in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution is getting attention in Bahrain. Several farmers have started growing vegetables and fruits through this process. Commercial hydroponic farming facilities are well established in Bahrain with a highly promising future. These farms successfully operate in Bahrain even in the summer months when the daytime temperatures are 40-50 degrees Celcius. Bahrain is now taking definite steps towards being self-sustaining with certain food items by adopting hydroponic practices. RTE salad mix or even the snacking section like cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, and the likes are hitting the hypermarket shelves. An increase in population and future prospects in the food industry are reasons for the increase in consumption. Bahrain is a net importer of various foodgrains but with this technology, Bahrain is actively trying to tackle the issue of food security. Rooftop farming is being given a huge boost by federal departments to local enthusiasts, hobby farmers and DIY hydroponic grow kits have become the talk of the town with many more joining the bandwagon. This new technology of growing crops is likely to drive the agricultural sector in the region during the forecast period. The GCC countries import 90% of food items from other countries on average in 2018. In terms of their dependence on foreign imports, Qatar toped the GCC with 97%, followed by Bahrain with 92%, Kuwait with 91% and the UAE with Oman with 89%.
