Global Zinc Sulfide Market Research Report 2023-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2029

Zinc sulfide is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula of ZnS. This is the predominant form of zinc in nature, mainly in the form of sphalerite and wurtzite. Both structures are wide-bandgap semiconductor materials and can be applied to optoelectronic devices. Although this mineral is usually black because of various impurities, the pure material is white, and it is widely used as a pigment. In its dense synthetic form, zinc sulfide can be transparent, and it is used as a window for visible optics and infrared optics.

Market Overview:

The latest research study on the global Zinc Sulfide market finds that the global Zinc Sulfide market reached a value of USD 178.72 million in 2022. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 210.68 million by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 2.78% during the forecast period.

COVID-19 has an impact on the global economy. The COVID-19 epidemic spread to more than 210 countries and regions around the world in three months, affecting nearly 7 billion people. The coronavirus epidemic has impacted all aspects of human health, economic growth, social development, national security, and international relations. It is a comprehensive challenge. The epidemic has drastically reversed expectations of moderate growth in the world economy in early 2020. After the outbreak, the employment situation in various countries has become more severe. Global investors panic, triggering turmoil in the financial and capital markets. The epidemic has caused huge losses to related industries and international trade. From the perspective of the general background, exports, consumption, and investment are driving the economy. After the outbreak of the epidemic, consumption, exports, and investment have all been affected to some extent. Therefore, the global economic downturn is inevitable.

In addition to the economic impact, the impact of COVID-19 on the industrial chain and market demand of the zinc sulfide industry is also unfavorable. The sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to strict lockdown regulations in many countries/regions, and the supply of raw materials has been restricted as a result. The production of zinc sulfide is also adversely affected. As for the downstream sales market of zinc sulfide, it was also affected by the blockade, resulting in the suspension of zinc sulfide import and export activities. Manufacturers in the downstream market have reduced production activities and reduced demand for zinc sulfide. COVID-19 has adversely affected the zinc sulfide industry.

The downstream market's demand for zinc sulfide is growing.

Zinc sulfide is used in many fields such as luminescent materials, optical materials, and pigments. With the continuous development of global economy and technology, major countries in the world have continued to increase their demand for luminescent materials, optical materials, pigments and other major application products of zinc sulfide. The growth of demand in the following market promotes the growth of demand for zinc sulfide and drives the development of the zinc sulfide industry.

Zinc sulfide is harmful to the environment.

Zinc sulfide easily penetrates the soil and pollutes groundwater and nearby waterways. Zinc is many times more toxic to fish and aquatic organisms than to humans and warm-blooded animals. Irrigation of farmland with zinc-containing sewage has a greater impact on crops, especially wheat, which will result in uneven emergence of wheat, fewer tillers, short plants and yellow leaves. Excessive zinc will also deactivate the soil, reduce the number of bacteria, and weaken the microbiological use of the soil. In addition, the process of roasting zinc sulfide ore, melting zinc, smelting other metals containing zinc impurities, and the large amount of zinc oxide and other metal fume generated during the copper casting process are directly harmful to people. The harm caused by zinc sulfide to the environment has led to increasingly stringent industry policies and regulations, which is one of the factors restricting the development of the zinc sulfide industry.

Application Overview:

The market's largest segment by application is the segment Pigment, with a market share of 50.94% in 2022.

Luminescent Material

Zinc sulfide can be applied to luminescent materials. With the addition of a few ppm of a suitable activator, zinc sulfide shows strong phosphorescence and is currently used in many applications, from cathode ray tubes to X-ray screens to luminous products. When silver is used as an activator, the resulting color is bright blue, with a maximum of 450 nanometers. Using manganese yields an orange-red color at around 590 nanometers. Copper gives a long-time glow, and it has the familiar greenish glow-in-the-dark. Copper-doped zinc sulfide (ZnS plus Cu) is used also in electroluminescent panels. It also exhibits phosphorescence due to impurities on illumination with blue or ultraviolet light.

Optical Material

Zinc sulfide is also used as an infrared optical material, transmitting from visible wavelengths to just over 12 micrometers. It can be used planar as an optical window or shaped into a lens. It is made as microcrystalline sheets by the synthesis from hydrogen sulfide gas and zinc vapor, and this is sold as FLIR-grade (Forward Looking Infrared), where the zinc sulfide is in a milky-yellow, opaque form. This material when hot isostatically pressed (HIPed) can be converted to a water-clear form known as Cleartran (trademark).

Pigment

Zinc sulfide is a common pigment, sometimes called sachtolith. When combined with barium sulfate, zinc sulfide forms lithopone.
