Global Water-Based Polyurethane Dispersions Market Research Report 2024-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2030

Water-based polyurethane dispersion refers to a polyurethane dispersion that does not contain emulsifiers. Its particle size is 0.001-0.1μm, its appearance is translucent, and it can be produced by internal emulsification or self-emulsification.

Market Overview:

The latest research study on the global Water-Based Polyurethane Dispersions market finds that the global Water-Based Polyurethane Dispersions market reached a value of USD 1593.11 million in 2023. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 2460.86 million by 2029, exhibiting a CAGR of 7.52% during the forecast period.

Problems faced in the production process

Judging from the production process of water-based polyurethane dispersion, the product is produced through the internal emulsion method. At present, the internal emulsion method refers to a method in which the polyurethane segment contains hydrophilic components and therefore can form a stable emulsion without the need for an emulsifier. Among them, the internal emulsion method can include prepolymer dispersion method, ketimine ketazine method, acetone method, melt dispersion condensation method, etc. Among them, currently, the prepolymer dispersion method and the acetone method are the main production processes on the market, and these processes require the use of a large amount of organic solvents. Take the acetone method as an example. This process has special requirements for the solvent. First of all, it must be inert and not participate in the isocyanate polycondensation reaction. The solvent must not contain water or other substances that interfere with the polymerization reaction. Commonly used solvents in industrial production are mainly acetone, butanone, etc. On the one hand, these are flammable and explosive dangerous goods, which face many constraints during production and transportation. In addition, a large amount of solvent is required during the production process, which makes the process complex and the solvent cost high. Compared with the acetone method, the prepolymer dispersion method consumes less solvent, but the molecular weight of the prepolymer synthesized by this method cannot be too high, and the prepolymer viscosity of the emulsion needs to be strictly controlled. Moreover, the particle size of the emulsion is relatively large, and the quality of the product obtained is not as good as the acetone method. The problems faced in the production process are one of the challenges facing the development of the industry.
