Businesses have a legal responsibility to prevent and contain spills, failure to do so could result in fines and penalties. These fines can be substantial and have a significant impact on a business' bottom line. Companies operating in regulated industries such as oil and gas face a higher risk of legal penalties in the event of a spill.
Globally, every country has certain legal requirements for containment of spills. Many laws and regulations apply to businesses that use, transport or store hazardous chemicals. For example, the US EPA and OSHA both have spill containment and secondary spill containment requirements.
