Global Polybutene-1 (Resin) Market Research Report 2023-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2029

Polybutylene (polybutene-1, poly(1-butene), PB-1) is a polyolefin or saturated polymer with the chemical formula (C4H8) n. It should not be confused with polybutene, a low molecular weight oligomer.

Market Overview:

The latest research study on the global Polybutene-1 (Resin) market finds that the global Polybutene-1 (Resin) market reached a value of USD 340.21 million in 2022. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 384.89 million by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 2.08% during the forecast period.

Impacts from the short term

The new coronavirus has been considered a pandemic by the World Organization, and few countries can escape its effects. At present, the world's major consumer and production countries, such as the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, and so on, are all trapped in the mire. Although isolation measures were not taken immediately in order not to affect economic development, the growing severity of the epidemic has affected the normal production of enterprises, as well as consumption, imports and exports between countries. The main consumption areas of PB are some countries in Europe and Asia, which are also the hardest hit areas of the current epidemic. It is expected that the sales volume of PB will not grow too much in the short term and may even shrink.

Impacts from the long term

In the long run, the PB market has great potential. The properties of PB materials are far stronger than other materials, so they are very popular in Europe and America. At the same time, it can reduce the damage to the environment. In some countries that advocate environmental protection, such as China, there will be a larger market.

Difficult implementation of polymerization technology and limited raw materials

Although polybutene achieved industrial production as early as 1964, due to the difficulty in implementing its polymerization technology and limited raw materials, it has limited the industrialized large-scale production of polybutene. Propylene has also developed rapidly. For a long time, only LyondellBasell in the world could produce polybutene products. At present, the company is still the world's largest manufacturer of polybutene. Mitsui Chemicals is the second largest polybutene manufacturer in the world, with a capacity of approximately 17,000 tons. The polybutene material supplied is a natural colorant, and a special color masterbatch needs to be added for use. In 2009, South Korean Ylem Technology Co., Ltd. also successfully built and put into operation an 8,000-ton polybutene production line with independent intellectual property rights. In the same year, the company was acquired by South Korean Aikang Company. Become the third company capable of producing polybutene.

The cost performance of PB materials is not as high as PP and PE in some countries

Due to its good heat dissipation, high temperature and pressure resistance, PB is easy to bend and easy to lay. It has many advantages. Polybutene pipes are commonly used for laying floor heating in many high-end communities in Europe and America. However, in some countries, because they do not produce raw materials and lack production technology, most of them can only rely on imports, so the price of PB is higher than that of PE and PP. In China, PB is known as soft gold in plastics. Except for some engineering projects that require relatively high corrosiveness, thermal creep resistance, or environmental protection, PE, PP or PPR materials are mostly used.
