Global Medical Device Adhesive Market Research Report 2023-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2029

Medical device adhesives refer to those adhesives used on medical devices that come into contact with the body, body fluids or delivery systems. The modern medical device manufacturing industry requires the final product to have maximum reliability and performance under many special conditions. For medical device manufacturers, when deciding to choose an adhesive, extensive testing and validation are usually required to determine the performance of the adhesive. This also requires that medical device adhesives need to have special properties to meet the requirements of medical device market economy and mass manufacturing.

Market Overview:

The latest research study on the global Medical Device Adhesive market finds that the global Medical Device Adhesive market reached a value of USD 2339.76 million in 2022. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 3251.94 million by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 5.64% during the forecast period.

Safety Regulation

Since a malfunctioning medical device could potentially harm a patient, reliability is paramount, and medical electronic devices are highly regulated. A common standard for adhesives in medical devices is biocompatibility. In North America, the most widely accepted test for biocompatibility is United States Pharmacopeia (USP) Class VI. Intended to evaluate the suitability of polymeric materials for direct and indirect patient contact, the USP Class VI regimen consists of a series of in vivo reactivity and toxicity tests. These tests involve injecting and implanting samples of the material under consideration into mice and rabbits, which are then evaluated at fixed time intervals for any ill effects. ISO 10993 is another standard that tests cytotoxicity and is used to determine an adhesive compatibility with blood and body fluids according to the requirements of the Elution Test, ISO 10993-5 guidelines.

An increase in the elderly population requiring medical assistance

With the increase of the elderly population, the average life expectancy is prolonged, the number of patients with chronic diseases is increasing, the life and quality of the elderly is constantly improving, and the demand for rehabilitation medical equipment and adaptation services is also gradually expanding. Growth in the market for implantable medical devices is also being driven by an ageing population that requires more devices like pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial hips, and neurological devices to control diseases such as Parkinson. The rapid development of medical device industry directly leads to the increase of the demand for medical device adhesives.

Region Overview:

In 2022, the share of the Medical Device Adhesive market in North America stood at 38.54%.

Company Overview:

H.B.Fuller is one of the major players operating in the Medical Device Adhesive market, holding a share of 17.72% in 2022.

H.B.Fuller

H.B. Fuller is a leading global adhesives provider focusing on perfecting adhesives, sealants and other specialty chemical products to improve products and lives. Their reliable, responsive service creates lasting, rewarding connections with customers in electronics, disposable hygiene, medical, transportation, clean energy, packaging, construction, woodworking, general industries and other consumer businesses.

Henkel

Henkel is a company that engages in laundry and home care, beauty care, and adhesive technology businesses. It operates through three segments. The laundry and home care segment offer heavy-duty and specialty detergents, fabric softeners, laundry performance enhancers, laundry care products, dishwashing products, cleaners for bathroom and WC applications, etc. The beauty care segment offers hair cosmetics, products for body, skin, and oral care, and products for the professional hair salon business. The adhesive technologies segment provides industrial and specialty adhesives, sealants, and functional coatings.

Segmentation Overview:

By type, Acrylic segment accounted for the largest share of market in 2022.

Cyanoacrylates

Cyanoacrylate medical adhesives exhibit extremely high adhesion properties and are highly resistant to a wide range of chemicals and solvents. They are also known as instant adhesives and provide strong bonding to a variety of substrates, including elastomers. With easy to dispense characteristics, cyanoacrylate adhesives for medical use enables medical device manufacturers to speed up assembly processes while continuing to offer safe and reliable products.

Acrylic

Acrylic adhesives are fast-acting adhesives (minutes to hours) with excellent substrate versatility, good strength, and a wide formulation range. The service temperature for continuous use (150°C) is greater than cyanoacrylate adhesives but lower than most epoxy adhesives.
There are several forms of acrylic adhesive available. One form is a 1K product that requires the use of a catalyst/primer on one or the other substrates. Another form is similar to 2K epoxy or urethane systems. However, the most widely used acrylic-based system for medical devices is light-curable acrylics.

Epoxy

One of the biggest advantages of medical epoxy adhesives is their ability to withstand extremely high temperatures, including most sterilization techniques. This allows biocompatible medical epoxy adhesives to be used in both disposable and reusable medical devices. Epoxy medical adhesives also provide good adhesion to a variety of substrates such as metals, glass, plastics, and other surfaces.

Silicone

Silicone adhesives are like polyurethanes in that they cure into an elastomeric polymer. However, silicone adhesives exhibit lower cohesive strengths than any other medical adhesive. Thus, they are primarily used for sealing, coating, and adhesive applications requiring high peel strength and where shear strength is a minor criterion. Silicone adhesives have a low surface tension so that they can provide excellent bonds to most low surface energy plastics.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane adhesives are often used for structural bonding medical devices since they provide high strength and flexibility during use. This is because medical polyurethane resin offers excellent mechanical properties making it an ideal choice for many different medical device applications. Additionally, polyurethane adhesive are used in medical devices in potting applications, as the polyurethanes offer the features desired for such applications, including low exotherm cure, low shrinkage, and excellent adhesion to a wide range of substrates.
