Challenges

Decreasing Farm Land
Decreased agricultural land is the main threat to the lucerne hay market.
According to the Global Land Outlook (Desertification Convention, 2017), one third of the world's land is severely degraded, and fertile soil is being lost at a rate of 24 billion tons per year. It is the most comprehensive study of its kind, and it depicts the interrelated effects of urbanization, climate change, erosion and forest loss. But the biggest factor is the expansion of industrialized agriculture.
In the past 20 years, agricultural production has tripled and the amount of irrigated land has doubled. However, in 20% of the world’s arable land, 16% of the woodland, 19% of the grassland and 27% of the pasture, productivity has declined.
The reduction of agricultural land has directly led to the planting area reduction of lucerne, posing a greater threat to the lucerne market.
Fierce Competition
The global lucerne hay market is relatively fragmented, which means that it is highly competitive and has no clearly defined major players. Participants in the market include both agricultural companies and retail farmers. Moreover, many farmers are now competing for a large part of the industry, and the dispersion of farmers’ production has led to increased uncertainty in market output.

Market Restraints

Shortcomings of Lucerne
Affected by the environment and climate:
The United States is one of the largest producers of lucerne and lucerne hay. In 2016, under the influence of severe drought and cold, the country's output fell by 1%.
For example, when France experienced a severe drought between 2017 and 2018, the growth of lucerne hay slowed down because it could not grow naturally under extreme heat.
Large water consumption:
Lucerne requires a lot of water, about 4 to 6 inches of water is needed to produce a ton of hay. Compared with other forage crops (such as barley, sorghum and corn), lucerne's water cost is relatively high. In regions such as the Middle East and Africa, water shortages and lack of irrigation have also hindered the lucerne hay market.
Changing water restrictions are also a concern. For example, California is one of the largest lucerne producing states in the United States, but due to the impact of the state's groundwater regulations, the production of lucerne is expected to decline.
