Global Insect Repellent Active Ingredients Market Research Report 2023-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2029

An insect repellent is a substance applied to skin, clothing, or other surfaces to discourage insects (and arthropods in general) from landing or climbing on that surface. Insect repellents help prevent and control the outbreak of insect-borne (and other arthropod-bourne) diseases such as malaria, Lyme disease, dengue fever, bubonic plague, river blindness, and West Nile fever. Insect repellent active ingredients are the main active ingredients of insect repellents, such as DEET, Picaridin/Icaridin, EBAPP/IR3535, P-methane 3,8-DIOL (PMD), DEPA.

Market Overview:

The latest research study on the global Insect Repellent Active Ingredients market finds that the global Insect Repellent Active Ingredients market reached a value of USD 193.41 million in 2022. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 322.06 million by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 8.87% during the forecast period.

Growth Drivers

The growth in consumption of insect repellent products, growth in households, increasing vector borne diseases, and implementation of innovative animal husbandry practices to protect the animals from insect infections have led to the increased consumption of insect repellent active ingredients. Moreover, alternatives to chemical-based insect repellents is one of the major opportunity for the insect repellent active ingredients market. With the technological development, the use of naturally derived formulations as insect repellents is increasing. The formulations are not only safer for humans but are also sustainable to the environment. To utilize this opportunity, various prominent players such as S C Johnson, MERCK Group, and Spectrum Brand Holdings are more focused on new product developments providing a competitive edge in terms of technical expertise.
According to a report published by the WHO in March 2020, vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases. These diseases cause more than 700,000 deaths annually. They can be caused by either parasites, bacteria, or viruses. During the last decade, there have been several outbreaks of life-threatening diseases, such as chikungunya, influenza, H1N1 virus, Zika virus, and dengue, mostly spread by insect vectors. Furthermore, mosquitoes spread various diseases including yellow fever, dengue, west Nile virus, malaria, and zika virus, which are accountable for numerous deaths across the world. According to the WHO, malaria is prevalent in 91 nations while 40% of the world population is at risk. In addition, as per the WHO, nearly 2 million deaths occur from an infection due to mosquito bite every year. Thus, with an increase in vector born disease, the demand and consumption of insect repellent products is expected to grow in near future. This drives the usage of insect repellent active ingredients market.

Region Overview:

North America had the highest growth rate of all regions.

Company Overview:

The top three companies are Vertellus, Clariant, BENZO with the revenue market share of 28.65%, 19.66%, 9.08% in 2022.

Founded in 1857, Vertellus manufactures more than 700 products that are used in medical devices, vitamins, health & beauty, crop protection, fuel & lube, and other products. The Company serves customers across the globe from 10 manufacturing facilities located in the United States, United Kingdom, India and China.

Clariant AG is a Swiss multinational speciality chemicals company, formed in 1995 as a spin-off from Sandoz. The company is focused on four business areas: care chemicals (consumer and industrial); catalysis; natural resources (oil & mining, minerals); and plastics & coatings. Headquartered in Muttenz, Switzerland, the public company encompasses 110 operating companies in 53 countries. Major manufacturing sites are located in Europe, North America, South America, China, and India.

Segmentation Overview:

By type, DEET segment accounted for the largest share of market in 2021.

DEET (chemical name, N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in many repellent products. It is widely used to repel biting pests such as mosquitoes and ticks. Every year, an estimated one-third of the U.S. population use DEET to protect them from mosquito-borne illnesses like West Nile Virus, the Zika virus or malaria and tick-borne illnesses like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Picaridin, also known as Icaridin, KBR 3023, under the INCI name hydroxyethyl isobutyl piperidine carboxylate, and the trade names Bayrepel and Saltidin, is an insect repellent active ingredient that is effective against a range of arthropods, including flies, mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks. It is typically effective against the Yellow Fever Mosquito, which can transmit the Zika Virus.

IR3535 is known as ethyl butylacetylaminopropionate [EBAAP], which is a synthetic insect repellent originally developed in the 1980s by Merck. It has acquired an excellent safety record. Insect Repellents with IR3535 effectively keep pests like mosquitoes and ticks at bay, lessening the exposure to insect-borne diseases like Zika.

P-methane 3,8-DIOL (PMD) is a biochemical pesticide derived from eucalyptus plants. This active ingredient is used to make products that are applied to human skin and clothing for the purpose of repelling insects, such as mosquitoes. It can be used in two types of consumer pesticide products: a spray and a lotion. When used according to the label, p-Menthane-3,8-diol products are not expected to cause harm to humans or the environment.

DEPA was developed in India by DRDE Gwalior as a repellent property against insect vectors mosquitoes, sandflies, black flies, and land leeches transmitting various diseases. DEPA repellent is the main active ingredient for DEPA-based formulations such as spray, cream, and lotion. The efficacy of DEPA appears to be almost identical to that of Deet. DEPA was also effective on clothing. Overall, DEPA is a useful active ingredient as a repellent.
