Global Glass-to-metal Seals Market Research Report 2023-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2029
A glass-to-metal seal (GTMS) typically consists of a metal housing, a molded glass-preform and one or several inner conductors. These components are melted in an inert gas atmosphere to form a hermetic seal in a special thermal process at approximately 1000°C. Glass-to-metal-seals ensure the hermetic fusion of glass and metal components (typically< 1E-8 mbar l/s). This connection is needed to feed the electrical conductors (pins) hermetically sealed and screened from the surrounding ambient environment into the package.
Market Overview:
The latest research study on the global Glass-to-metal Seals market finds that the global Glass-to-metal Seals market reached a value of USD 1710.0 million in 2022. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 2176.2 million by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of 4.1% during the forecast period.
Since the COVID-19 virus outbreak in December 2019, the disease has spread to almost 100 countries around the globe with the World Health Organization declaring it a public health emergency. The global impacts of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are already starting to be felt, and will significantly affect the Glass-to-Metal Seals market in 2020. COVID-19 can affect the global economy in three main ways: by directly affecting production and demand, by creating supply chain and market disruption, and by its financial impact on firms and financial markets. During the epidemic, the resumption of work, operations, revenue targets, and industry development of the Glass-to-Metal Seals industry were all challenge.
The global impacts of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are already starting to be felt, and will significantly affect the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (Glass-to-Metal Seals) market in 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 has brought effects on many aspects, like flight cancellations; travel bans and quarantines; restaurants closed; all indoor/outdoor events restricted; over forty countries state of emergency declared; massive slowing of the supply chain; stock market volatility; falling business confidence, growing panic among the population, and uncertainty about future. During the epidemic, people were kept at home and prohibited from going out. The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has affected the capacities and financial conditions of Glass-to-Metal Seals providers. The pandemic has resulted in a widespread health crisis, which is adversely affecting the financial markets and economies of countries and the end-use industries for hermetic packaged products. This is expected to lead to an economic downturn and is expected to affect the demand for Glass-to-Metal Seals negatively. The overall long-term impact of COVID-19 on the hermetic packaging market is expected to depend upon various factors such as global spread and duration of the pandemic, the actions taken by various government authorities worldwide in response to the pandemic, and the severity of the disease.
Stringent Standards & Regulations to Hamper Market
Limited use of GTMS owing to stringent government regulations and standard for medical, military and aerospace applications is the major restraining factor that could hamper the growth of the market. The glass to metal seals has limited usage due to stringent norms for aerospace, military, and medical applications. The protocol was placed on their usage in private, research, and commercial application. The glass to metal seals policy and regulations differs between countries for usage in military & defense industry. Therefore, manufactures of need to follow various design constrains, periodic review, renewals, license, approval, certification, and other stringent norms of according to a number of national authorities.
Wide application
A growing use of glass to metal seal for the construction of various electronics devices is the major driving factor behind the growth of the market. An increasing importance of GTMS in industries such as military & defense, automotive, consumer electronics, aeronautics and space, healthcare and many others, growing urbanization and industrialization, surge in the demand of robust seals to maintain long life environmental and electrical integrity sealing and rising requirement of GTMSs in various applications to withstand in extreme conditions such as high pressure, high temperature, moisture, vibration and in many other difficult chemical environments are expected to improve growth of the market during the forecast period.
Automotive electronics provides higher comfort, safety, security for vehicle. Moreover, increasing consumer preference for the technologically advanced vehicle expected to increase demand of the automotive electronics. Consequently, anticipated to increase demand of the glass to metal seals for various automotive components such as airbag initiator, crash sensor, and others.
Moreover, growing industrialization and urbanization indirectly drive the demand for glass to metal seals. This factor is expected to fuel the global glass to metal seals market during the forecast period. Companies operating in the global glass to metal seals market are investing to expand their product portfolios and improve their distribution networks. They have adopted strategies such as mergers and acquisitions, development of new products, joint ventures, and expansions to cater to the increasing demand for glass to metal seals in different regions.
The global glass to metal seals market is anticipated to expand at a rapid pace during the forecast period, owing to increased demand for glass to metal seals for use in fuel cell manufacturing, electrical penetration control, veterinary & dental application, airbag initiation, and others.

Segmentation Overview:
As for product types, the Compression Seals segment held the largest market share in 2021.
Matched Seal
In a matched seal, the coefficient of thermal expansion of glass, housing and pins are matched as closely as possible. Matched seals have the advantage that only small levels of residual stress are present and the feedthrough can withstand very high temperatures. The seal between glass and metal is mainly established chemically through an oxide layer. This type of glass-to-metal seal is often used for hermetic electronics packages.
The matched seal type is designed to seal Fe-Ni-Co alloy, known as Kovar (KV for short), with glass. The thermal expansion coefficient of Kovar synchronizes with that of glass over a wide range of temperatures. The matched seal type can be used to make a variety of terminals with comparatively few restrictions on the terminal shape. At the same time, it provides high air-tightness and electrical insulation.
Since most applications required devices to operate in a wide range of temperatures, it is vital for the components to expand and contract at very similar rates. This would ensure that no stresses or misalignments occur during production or operation. Feedthroughs must work over the full operating temperature ranges, and generally must work flawlessly over many thousands of thermal cycles. A common material system used in the industry is Kovar per ASTM F-15 (Fe-Ni-Co alloy) with a Borosilicate glass. The coefficient of thermal expansion of Kovar is a very good match to glass over a wide range of temperatures.
Compression Seal
Compression seals employ a coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch between glass, housing and pins. The hermetic seal is established because the thermal compression of the outer housing acts on the glass as the parts cool down after heat treatment. Housing materials with a high CTE, such as stainless steels or titanium are well suited for compression seals. Depending on design, a compression seal can withstand a very high level of pressure (up to 3000 bars possible). This type of glass-to-metal seal is, among other uses, perfectly suited for high-pressure sensors.
If the feedthrough needed focuses on pressure capability, corrosion resistance or conductor strength then a compression type of GTMS may be a better option. Glass has the interesting property of getting stronger when it is compressed. The materials are specifically engineered to result in positive pressure between the glass to metal joints which can enhance overall system strength in difficult mechanical environments.
The compression seal is designed to exert concentric compressive stress on the glass in the available temperature range, while considering the thermal expansion coefficients of the metal and glass. In general, there are three different types of compression seals, namely seals with steel or stainless-steel housings, iron seals and 42-alloy seals.
