Global Chromated Copper Arsenate Market Research Report 2023-Competitive Analysis, Status and Outlook by Type, Downstream Industry, and Geography, Forecast to 2029
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a group of pesticides containing chromium, copper, and/or arsenic that protect wood against termites, fungi and other pests that can degrade or threaten the integrity of wood products. Chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated wood is used to produce commercial wood poles, posts, shakes, shingles, permanent foundation support beams, pilings, and other wood products permitted by approved labeling.
Market Overview:The latest research study on the global Chromated Copper Arsenate market finds that the global Chromated Copper Arsenate market reached a value of USD 71.77 million in 2022. It’s expected that the market will achieve USD 49.74 million by 2028, exhibiting a CAGR of -5.93% during the forecast period.
Alternatives to CCA-Treated Wood
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a commonly used chemical preservative for wood, however there are various alternatives on the market due to its reported toxic effects on the environment. Most dimensional lumber, as well as plywood and engineered beams (glulams), can be pressuretreated with CCA alternatives. Two major alternative wood preservatives should be used instead of CCA: C-A (Copper Azole, sold under the trade name Natural Select; sometimes formulated as CBA, copper boron azole) and ACQ (Alkaline Copper Quartenary, sold under the trade names Preserve or NatureWood.) C-A is a copper-based preservative with an organic fungicide. The treated wood is dark honey brown color and turns silver-gray after it weathers. The brown color can be restored by lightly sanding the outer layer. C-A is clean to the touch, not corrosive to appropriate metal hardware and extends the life of wood. It provides long-term resistance to termites and fungal decay in both ground contact and above-ground applications. C-A treated wood can be used for most applications where CCA was typically used, such as decks, walkways, gazebos, picnic tables, and play structures. It can also be used in fresh water immersion applications; however, it is not approved for saltwater use or structural utility poles in high decay regions. The treatment chemicals are very stable, do not vaporize, and are not vulnerable to thermal or photochemical degradation.
Heavy metal pollution
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) products contain copper, chromium, arsenic and other elements, which may be contaminated by heavy metals during use. Heavy metals generally refer to metal elements whose density is greater than 4.5g/cm3. According to environmental standards, heavy metals include copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr) and other metal elements, As well as metal-like arsenic (As) and other elements with significant biological toxicity. Heavy metal pollution generally occurs in the form of heavy metal ions, which can exist in water, air, soil, organisms and other media. Low concentration is enough to cause harm. The chemical activity of the heavy metal ions is stronger, is very easy and proteins in organic chemistry, biology active group (hydroxyl, carboxyl, aldehyde, amine, thiol) form relatively stable coordination compounds, such as so heavy metal ions are difficult to be biodegradable eduction body outside, instead can combine with plants, animals and other organisms is firm and gradually enriched up over time, and it migrates down the food chain. For example, if the soil or water is polluted by heavy metals, the heavy metals in the water and soil will be absorbed and enriched by grain, vegetables, fruits, tea and feed crops planted on the soil, and the concentration of heavy metals will be much higher than that in the original soil and water. After people or livestock and poultry eat these plants and agricultural products, heavy metals will be further enriched in human body and livestock and poultry, and after people eat livestock, the heavy metals enriched in livestock will also enter human body. Heavy metals may also accumulate in some organs of the human body, resulting in chronic poisoning, carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects, damage to the human immune system, and seriously threaten human health and food safety. Therefore, there are heavy metal pollution problems in the production and use of chromated copper arsenate (CCA), which makes some countries restrict the use of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) products in related applications, thus restricting the development of the whole industry of CCA.
