The global Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitor market size is predicted to grow from US$ 138 million in 2025 to US$ 210 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.2% from 2025 to 2031.
Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitor is the device used for transcutaneous oximetry (TcPO2 or TCOM), which is a local, non-invasive measurement reflecting the amount of O2 that has diffused from the capillaries through the epidermis. Today, transcutaneous oxygen monitoring is clinically prevalent in various applications such as wound-healing assessment, hyperbaric medicine, amputation-level resoluteness and others. Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitor consists of a combined platinum and silver electrode covered by an oxygen-permeable hydrophobic membrane, with a reservoir of phosphate buffer and potassium chloride trapped inside the electrode. A small heating element is located inside the silver anode. The oxygen monitor consists of a TcPO2 channel, for which high and low alarm limits can be set, a temperature display channel and a heat channel.
The Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitor (TCOM) market is driven by the increasing prevalence of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. These conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and peripheral arterial disease, require continuous monitoring of oxygen levels in the blood to guide effective treatment. As the aging population grows and the incidence of these diseases rises, the demand for non-invasive, real-time monitoring solutions like TCOMs has significantly increased, making it a vital tool in hospitals, outpatient settings, and home care.
A key challenge in the Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitor market is the high cost associated with the devices and their maintenance. The sophisticated technology involved in measuring oxygen levels through the skin, along with the need for calibration and sensor replacement, can be a financial burden for healthcare providers. This makes it difficult for smaller hospitals or clinics in developing regions to adopt the technology, potentially limiting its market penetration.
Another challenge lies in the accuracy and limitations of TCOM in certain clinical situations. Factors like skin thickness, temperature, and local blood flow can impact the accuracy of the readings, especially in critically ill or pediatric patients. This makes it necessary for healthcare professionals to rely on additional diagnostic tools alongside TCOM, which can limit its standalone utility and slow adoption in some clinical environments.
