Global Superabsorbent Resins for Hygiene Market Growth 2023-2029
Superabsorbent Resins for Hygiene (SAP) is a new functional polymer material capable of absorbing and retaining liquids much larger than its own mass, capable of absorbing hundreds to thousands of times its own weight of water, and the absorbed water is not released by simple physical means, no matter how much pressure is applied. Water-absorbing polymers, which are hydrogels, are able to absorb solutions through hydrogen bonds linked to water molecules. Before absorbing water, SAP is in the form of long chains of interwoven macromolecules. Upon contact with water the web of macromolecules expands and the water is locked in the mesh. The total absorbency and swelling capacity is controlled by the type and degree of cross-linking with the polymer. Low density cross-linked highly absorbent polymers usually have a high water absorption capacity and swell to a relatively large extent. High cross-link density polymers show low absorbency and swelling capacity. Highly absorbent polymers are usually polymerized by mixing acrylic acid and sodium hydroxide in the presence of an initiator to produce sodium polyacrylate (sometimes referred to as sodium acrylonitrile). This polymer is now the most common type of highly absorbent polymer in the world. Other materials are also used to produce highly absorbent polymers, such as polyacrylamide copolymers, ethylene and maleic anhydride copolymers, cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol copolymers, cross-linked polyethylene oxide and starch-grafted polyacrylonitrile copolymers.
