Recuperative oxidizers are air pollution control devices used to treat and remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) from industrial exhaust streams. These oxidizers operate by oxidizing the VOCs and HAPs at high temperatures, typically between 800 and 1,200 degrees Celsius.

The term "recuperative" refers to the heat recovery mechanism employed in these oxidizers. The hot exhaust gases leaving the combustion chamber are passed through a heat exchanger, where they transfer their heat to a thermal fluid, such as air or a heat transfer oil. This recovered heat is then used to preheat the incoming exhaust stream, reducing the energy required to maintain the high operating temperatures.

Recuperative oxidizers can be further classified into two types: direct-fired and indirect-fired. In direct-fired recuperative oxidizers, the combustion of VOCs and HAPs occurs directly in the combustion chamber, while in indirect-fired recuperative oxidizers, a separate burner is used to generate the necessary heat, and the combustion gases are then passed through the heat exchanger.

The advantages of recuperative oxidizers include high destruction efficiency, typically above 99%, and energy efficiency due to the heat recovery mechanism. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, including chemical manufacturing, printing, pharmaceuticals, and food processing. However, they may not be suitable for streams with high particulate matter or corrosive components, as these can cause fouling or damage to the heat exchanger.
