Global Pulse Tube and Gifford-McMahon Cryocoolers Market Growth 2025-2031

The global Pulse Tube and Gifford-McMahon Cryocoolers market size is predicted to grow from US$ 551 million in 2025 to US$ 803 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.5% from 2025 to 2031.

The pulse tube cryocooler is a developing technology that emerged largely in the early 1980s with a series of other innovations in the broader field of thermoacoustics. In contrast with other cryocoolers (e.g. Stirling cryocooler and GM-refrigerators), this cryocooler can be made without moving parts in the low temperature part of the device, making the cooler suitable for a wide variety of applications. Pulse tube cryocoolers are used in industrial applications such as semiconductor fabrication and in military applications such as for the cooling of infrared sensors. Pulse tubes are also being developed for cooling of astronomical detectors where liquid cryogens are typically used, such as the Atacama Cosmology Telescope or the Qubic experiment (an interferometer for cosmology studies). PTRs are used as precoolers of dilution refrigerators. Pulse tubes will be particularly useful in space-based telescopes where it is not possible to replenish the cryogens as they are depleted. It has also been suggested that pulse tubes could be used to liquefy oxygen on Mars.

Global manufacturers of Pulse Tube and Gifford-McMahon Cryocoolers include Sumitomo Heavy Industries, ULVAC Cryogenics, Edwards, Cryomech (Bluefors), Thales Group, AIM and CSSC Pride Cryogenics and etc. And the top five manufacturers account for about 71% of the market share. Japan is the largest market with a share of about 50%, followed by North America and Europe with 21% and 17% respectively. In terms of product type, Gifford-McMahon Cryocoolers is the largest segment, accounting for about 57% of the share. And in terms of application, Semiconductor is the largest downstream field, accounting for 31% of the share.
