Global Poly (DL-lactic) Acid Market Growth 2025-2031

Global Poly (DL-lactic) Acid Market Growth 2025-2031

The global Poly (DL-lactic) Acid market size is predicted to grow from US$ 3.9 million in 2025 to US$ 5.9 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% from 2025 to 2031.

PLA , derived from lactic acid, is a biobased and biodegradable polymer made from annually renewable resources, offering a reduced carbon footprint versus many traditional plastics.

PDLLA is created by polymerizing a mixture of both L-lactic acid and D-lactic acid. A 1:1 ratio of both isomers is typically used, the degree of crystallinity of the final polymer can be altered by tweaking with this ratio. In general, however, PDLLA is less crystalline and more amorphous than its PLLA and PDLA counterparts.

Polylactide (Poly(lactic acid), PLA) is polymer obtained by the ring-opening polymerization of lactide (cyclic dimer of lactic acid) as monomer. Since lactide has 3 optical isomer as L-lactide, D-lactide, and DL-lactide, the polymers obtained from L-lactide, D-lactide, and DL-lactide are abbreviated to PLLA, PDLA, and PDLLA, respectively. The chemical properties of L-lactide and D-lactide are the same while their steric structures are different, PLLA polymer and PDLA polymer have the same characteristics. On the other hand, PDLLA polymer has sterically different structure with PLLA and PDLA polymers, so that the polymer shows the different characteristics with those polymers.

Production of DL-lactic acid is small globally, so is the PDLLA. PDLLA is totally different with the industrial PLA, which is mainly used in consumer goods, fibers, food service ware and 3D-printing, etc. The PDLLA industry is still in the infant stage and manufacturers are dedicated to expanding their PDLLA business. Impacted by the technology barrier, there are only a few producers currently in the high concentrated industry with small size. Musashino Chemical Laboratory, located in Japan, is the largest producer of PDLLA with advanced technology.

One of the largest drivers for PDLLA is its wide application in the biomedical field. PDLLA is biocompatible and biodegradable, making it an excellent material for use in resorbable medical devices such as surgical sutures, bone fixation screws, and tissue engineering scaffolds. The polymer gradually degrades in the body, eliminating the need for a second surgery to remove implants. The global increase in healthcare spending is driving demand for advanced biocompatible materials like PDLLA. As healthcare systems invest more in innovative treatments, the demand for PDLLA-based products rises.
