Non-invasive Brain Injury Monitoring Devices, are designed to provide continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) by means of a probe mounted on the forehead. Although the skull is a closed, rigid structure, interrogation using infrared light provides a potential 'window' for monitoring cerebral haemodynamics. The probe contains an infrared light source that illuminates the deep brain tissue of the frontal lobe, while a photodetector in the probe detects backscattered light modulated by the pulsations of the cerebral arteries. Changes in pressure around the cerebral arteries affect the pattern of the recorded light pulses, so that the analysis of the acquired signal using an appropriate algorithm allows the calculation of a non-invasive ICP (nICP) that can be continuously displayed to the clinician.
