Global NiCd Batteries Market Growth 2025-2031
The global NiCd Batteries market size is predicted to grow from US$ 1079 million in 2025 to US$ 1219 million in 2031; it is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.1% from 2025 to 2031.
Nickel Cadmium (NiCd). Nickel-cadmium cells have an anode made of cadmium hydroxide and a cathode of nickel hydroxide that are immersed in an electrolyte made up of potassium, sodium and lithium hydroxides. Nickel-cadmium batteries require relatively low maintenance, are reliable and have a wide operating temperature range. NiCd batteries are known for their ability to operate effectively in extreme temperatures, both high and low. This makes them suitable for applications in harsh environments, such as in aerospace, military, and outdoor equipment, where reliability is critical.
Advantages of nickel-cadmium batteries: 1. "Sturdy" and cheap: Nickel-cadmium batteries are the earliest dry rechargeable batteries. They are now mature in technology and low in price. The price is only four times that of alkaline batteries. The actual use is equivalent to 500 paste-type zinc-manganese batteries, so the usage fee is very low. Its positive electrode uses nickel hydroxide, the negative electrode is cadmium oxide, and the electrolyte is potassium hydroxide. The rated voltage is 1.2 volts. It is in a discharged state when it leaves the factory, and the initial voltage is not higher than 1.0 volts. This is a clear difference between counterfeit rechargeable batteries or old rechargeable batteries and new ones. 2. Stable discharge platform: The maximum voltage when fully charged can reach 1.6V~1.8V. After starting to work, it quickly falls back to the rated voltage. After that, it can maintain a stable voltage value for a long time, and only drops rapidly when the power is used up. 3. Low self-discharge: The final discharge voltage of nickel-cadmium batteries is 1.0 V. The self-discharge rate is large, reaching 25%~28%/month, and it is not suitable for full charge storage. Nickel-cadmium batteries have extremely small internal resistance, can provide a particularly large discharge current, the short-circuit current can reach 6A, and the discharge voltage is stable. 4. Overcharge-resistant battery: Nickel-cadmium batteries should be charged with constant current and can be charged with high current. Since the voltage will drop if charging continues after the battery is fully charged, the negative voltage increment (-V) can be used for automatic control to end the charging. If charging continues after the battery is fully charged, the electrical energy will be completely converted into heat energy, the battery will heat up violently, and the temperature rise can reach (^T/t) to automatically end the charging. A major advantage of cadmium batteries is that the risk of overcharging is not great. If trickle charging is used, overcharging has almost no effect on the battery. Therefore, a cheap half-wave rectifier series resistor current-limiting constant voltage charger can be used for charging. The current is relatively large at the beginning, and then gradually decreases. There is no need to have a timing or sufficient automatic termination function. A slightly better method can be used for high-power constant current fast charging, and the power supply is automatically cut off at a fixed time.
Meanwhile, NiCd batteries are subject to memory effect and may experience thermal runaway if overcharged. Many countries impose strict disposal regulations on NiCd batteries because of the heavy metals used in their manufacture. At the same time, the rise of new battery technologies such as lithium-ion batteries provides lighter, more energy-dense and more environmentally friendly options, which poses a huge competition to nickel-cadmium batteries.
