Lost foam casting is a process in which a pattern made of expandable polystyrene (EPS) foam is used to create a mold into which molten metal is poured. When the metal is poured, the foam pattern evaporates, leaving the cast metal part. The molding material used in lost foam casting is generally dry quartz sand. When the foam plastic model is replaced by liquid metal, a large amount of gas generated by thermal decomposition can be discharged from the mold through the gap between the dry sand. However, liquid metal can easily penetrate into the gaps between dry sands under the action of negative pressure to form mechanical sands. In order to avoid mechanical grinding, the surface of the lost foam must be coated with a layer of refractory paint. During the casting process, this layer of refractory coating is located between the molten metal and the molding sand, and plays an important role in the vaporization of the lost foam, the filling of the molten metal and the molding of the casting.
