Medical Ge-Ga generators are a special radionuclide generator that uses Ge-68 (68Ge) as the parent isotope and continuously produces Gallium-68 (68Ga) through its radioactive decay. Gallium-68 is a positron emitter with a short half-life (about 67.71 minutes) and is suitable for medical diagnostic technologies such as PET (positron emission computed tomography). The germanium gallium generator usually consists of a closed system that contains a carrier (such as a titanium dioxide layer on a borosilicate glass column) with germanium-68 adsorbed on it. Germanium-68 releases electrons and neutrons during the decay process, and some of the decay products are gallium-68. Gallium-68 can be eluted from the generator through a specific eluent (such as sterile ultrapure 0.1 molar hydrochloric acid) for subsequent medical applications.
