Thermal field emission electron guns combine the principles of thermal emission and field emission. It heats the emitter (cathode) and applies an electric field near the emitter to emit electrons using the Schottky effect. The cathode (emitter) is usually made of ZrO2/W material, which is a structure in which a ZrO2 coating is plated on the surface of a tungsten single crystal. The ZrO2 coating greatly reduces the work function, allowing a larger current to be emitted at a lower cathode temperature (about 1800K). The tip radius of curvature of the emitter is several hundred nanometers, and this design can greatly enhance the electric field at the cathode. In order to shield the hot electrons emitted from the emitter, a negative voltage is applied to the suppression electrode. The operating temperature is usually about 1800K, which greatly improves the emission efficiency of the electron gun. When working, the electron gun part is set in an ultra-high vacuum of about 10^-7Pa to ensure the cleanliness and high temperature state of the emitter, thereby maintaining the stability of the electron beam current. Compared with the cold field emission electron gun, the electron beam energy divergence of the thermal field emission electron gun is slightly larger, but a larger probe current can be obtained. It is suitable for various analyses while observing the morphology.
