EDM is a manufacturing process in which sparks are generated by electrical discharge to make the workpiece into the desired shape. A dielectric liquid separates the two electrodes and applies a voltage to generate a periodic and rapidly changing current discharge to process the material. One of the electrodes is called the tool electrode, or the pole, and the other electrode is called the workpiece electrode, or simply the workpiece. During EDM, there is no actual contact between the tool electrode and the workpiece electrode. When the potential difference between the two electrodes increases, the electric field between the two electrodes will also increase until the electric field strength is higher than the dielectric strength. At this time, the dielectric collapse will occur and the current will flow through the two electrodes. This phenomenon and As with capacitor collapse (see Breakdown Voltage), remove part of the electrode material. When the current stops, a new dielectric flows into the electric field between the electrodes, displacing solid particles, and the dielectric's insulating properties are restored. After the current flows, the potential difference between the two electrodes will return to before the dielectric collapse, so that a new dielectric collapse can be repeated.
